The New Brunswick Arts Board (artsnb) is excited to announce the Artist in Residence program for New Brunswick public or private institutions and organizations that wish to host professional artists in order to enable them to pursue specific projects relating to their creative work.
Objectives
- This program is also open to individual artists who seek to advance their creative work through participation in residency opportunities of 3 months and longer. The artists in residence are to contribute to the promotion and understanding of the arts by means of the artists’ contact with the clientele of the hosting establishments.
- The objectives of the Artist in Residence program are:
- To increase opportunities for professional artists to undertake specific creative projects while being hosted by New Brunswick institutions or organizations;
- To increase opportunities for New Brunswick students and residents to develop their awareness of the arts through direct contact with professional artists; and
- To increase opportunities for New Brunswick professional artists to participate in residencies at home or abroad.
Funding Information
- For individuals and non-profit organizations, level of funding is 100% of budgeted expenses to a maximum of:
- $5,000 for periods of up to 6 months
- $10,000 for periods of 6 to 12 months
- For institutions and for-profit organizations, level of funding is up to 50% of budgeted expenses (hosting party must contribute at least 50% of costs) to a maximum of: $5,000 for periods of up to 6 months
- $10,000 for periods of 6 to 12 months
Eligibility Criteria
- A public or private institution or organization is eligible to apply if:
- It is established in New Brunswick;
- It can present as a candidate artist-in-residence a professional artist who has made significant contributions in an arts discipline and who continues to be active in the profession;
- It can present a project which meets the objectives of the program; and
- It does not have an overdue Final Report for any project funded by artsnb.
- An individual artist is eligible to apply who:
- Meets the professional artist criteria;
- Is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
- Has resided in New Brunswick for at least one year (12 months) prior to the application deadline;
- Presents a residency project with a duration of three (3) months or longer that meets the objectives of the program; and
- Does not have an overdue Final Report for any project funded by artsnb.
- An applicant may receive only one Artist in Residence grant per fiscal year (April 1 – March 31).
- Please note: Individual artists planning a residency project with a duration of less than 3 months are not eligible for this program and must instead apply under the Career Development: Artist-in-Residence program
- Residencies shall not include regular teaching duties.
- For individual applicants, projects must not be produced for the purposes of academic credit or as part of the applicant’s work as an employee of a private or public organisation or institution.
- Eligible artistic disciplines include architecture, craft, dance, literary arts (including spoken word, storytelling, literary performance and literary translation), media arts, multidisciplinary arts, classical and non-classical music, theatre and visual arts.
- Eligible genres for all artistic disciplines include those whose intent and/or content places creativity, selfexpression and/or experimentation the current demands and format expectations of the mainstream industry, and has a significance beyond being solely a form of entertainment.
