The Shack Dwellers International (SDI Kenya) is pleased to announce a call for applications dubbed “Climate Responsive Funds’’ within the Next Level Grants Facility (NLGF) under the Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) Programme.
This call is directed to small grassroot organizations e.g. Groups, CBOs, Networks already carrying out climate change initiatives who wish to amplify their work and quickly respond to emergencies, unforeseen events or emerging opportunities that reverse and/or combat adverse effects of climate change.
Next Level Grants Facility (NLGF) is, therefore, a financing tool created within the framework of Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) program that aims to foster a bottom-up approach to decision- making, where communities and local actors play a key role in identifying priorities and defining solutions, with specific regard to include voices that are traditionally excluded.
Objective of Next Level Grants Facility (NLGF)
- NLGF is designed to efficiently support groups, CBOS and other CSOs to amplify their work and quickly respond to emergencies and revolutionize traditional grant funding methods with an aim to promptly respond to environmental and climate crises while highlighting locally-driven initiatives.
Funding Information
- Grant sizes will be awarded as follows;
- Small Informal Organization – Up to a maximum of KES 500,000
- Groups- Up to a maximum of KES 200,000
Project Duration
- The project implementation cycle is 4 months. Applicants should come up with initiatives that guarantee micro wins within the given turnaround time and have a sustainability plan after the end of project duration.
Target Groups
- The grant targets small grassrootsl organizations (e.g. Youth groups, CSOs CBOs) and groups that do not have the capacity to apply and report on more formal grants. These groups represent local rights-holders and work on local climate solutions; including women and youth groups, and groups of persons with disabilities who by their informal nature of operations, are not able to access other donor resources.
Geographical Scope
- Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, Mombasa, Homa-bay, Marsabit, Siaya, Kajiado, Lamu, Kwale, Kilifi, Narok, Wajir, Samburu, Garissa and Baringo counties.
Eligibility Criteria
- The grant targets small formal & informal organizations (e.g. Groups, CBOs) that do not have the capacity to apply and report on more formal grants. These groups represent local rights-holders and work on local climate solutions; including women and youth groups, groups of persons with disabilities who by their informal nature of operations, are not able to access other donor resources.
- The target groups should have the following characteristics:
- Group of persons or communities that are at risk, vulnerable, or under threat due to climate change-related activities with a clear action plan of how to minimize/combat the effects of such.
- Groups that are advocating and lobbying for resources to amplify their climate actions.
- Groups that are part of a movement or network that pushes for sustainable climate action initiatives.
- Other Requirements
- Community groups must have a minimum membership of 10
- Group must have been in existence for a minimum period of 6 months.
- Groups must be recommended by either a VCA Local Partner or area local administration.
- Groups/CBOs must exhibit that they operate on cash flows less than KES 100,000 per month.
