Access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) remains a pressing challenge in many developing regions. Recognizing the pivotal role of community-led initiatives in addressing these issues, the Japan Water Forum (JWF) has opened applications for its 2025 Fund.
This annual grant program aims to support grassroots organizations in implementing sustainable water-related projects that directly benefit local communities.
Established in 2005, the JWF Fund is dedicated to assisting grassroots organizations in developing countries to tackle local water-related challenges.
By providing financial support, the fund enables these organizations to implement projects that improve access to clean water, enhance sanitation facilities, and promote hygiene practices.
Over the past two decades, the JWF Fund has supported 204 projects across 32 countries, positively impacting more than 280,000 individuals.
For the 2025 cycle, the JWF Fund will award grants of up to USD 1,500 per project. The application period is open from June 2 to June 30, 2025, Japan Standard Time.
Approximately five projects will be selected for funding. Applicants are encouraged to thoroughly review the guidelines and submit their proposals through the official application form.
The fund is open to active local grassroots organizations operating in countries or territories classified as Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Low-Income Countries (LICs), or Lower-Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) according to the OECD’s DAC list.
Eligible projects should focus on addressing water-related issues through sustainable and community-driven approaches.
The JWF Fund supports a diverse range of projects, including:
Construction or repair of water supply resources, such as wells and reservoirs.
Installation of small-scale water supply systems.
Construction or renovation of sanitation and hygiene facilities.
Maintenance and improvement of water resource environments.
Promotion of water-efficient irrigation systems.
Implementation of programs to mitigate water-related disaster risks.
Projects that incorporate awareness-raising or training programs for capacity-building are highly encouraged, as they enhance the sustainability and long-term impact of the initiatives
Interested organizations should prepare a comprehensive proposal detailing the project’s objectives, implementation plan, expected outcomes, and sustainability measures.
The application form and guidelines are available on the Japan Water Forum’s official website. Applicants are advised to ensure that their proposals align with the fund’s objectives and criteria.
The Japan Water Forum Fund 2025 offers a valuable opportunity for grassroots organizations to secure funding for impactful water-related projects. By supporting community-driven initiatives, the fund contributes to the global effort of achieving sustainable access to clean water and sanitation.
