Diversify Photo and the Pulitzer Center are pleased to open applications for the third year of the Eyewitness Photojournalism Grant.
This grant aims to tell visual stories about and by photojournalists from historically underrepresented communities.
They invite photojournalists to submit proposals for stories that focus on and explore the systemic and underreported issues in the communities, including but not limited to racial justice, climate change, environmental justice, gender equality, and human rights. Eyewitness Photojournalism Grant is extended to photojournalists worldwide, with a preference for journalists working within their own local communities.
Funding Information
- Grants of $3,000 will be awarded to three applicants to support their visual reporting projects. As part of this year’s program, recipients will also have the opportunity to be mentored by other visual and photojournalists.
- They are still seeking news media partners to collaborate with them on the distribution of selected work.
What they Don’t Fund?
To save the grantees and staff time, they thought it would be helpful to outline editorial products and project expenses they don’t fund:
- Books (they can support a story that might become part of a book, as long as the story is published independently in a media outlet)
- Feature-length films (they do support short documentaries with ambitious distribution plans)
- Staff salaries
- Equipment purchases (equipment rentals are considered on a case-by-case basis)
- An outlet’s general expenses (for example rent, utilities, insurance)
- Seed money for start-ups
- Routine breaking news and coverage
- Advocacy/marketing campaigns
- Data projects aimed solely at academic research. Data should be developed to enhance/support journalism.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be independent photojournalists from anywhere in the world, and applicants are strongly encouraged to apply with a letter of commitment from a news outlet with significant reach.
- In addition to DPxPC funding, they expect news outlets to contribute to the cost of reporting these stories.
- Applications must be received in English. There is no application fee.
