The Food Sovereignty Grant funds small projects that contribute to improving local food production, harvesting, and distribution in a sustainable manner. The grant is intended for initiatives that promote long-term food security and self-sufficiency on Haida Gwaii.
Priorities
- The ultimate goal is to enhance food security and foster self-sufficiency within the community. The grant focuses on the following priorities:
- Enhancing Local Production: Support projects that increase the capacity for growing and harvesting food locally.
- Sustainable Practices: Promote environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural practices that benefit the community.
- Strengthening Distribution Networks: Improve access to fresh, locally-produced food through better distribution methods.
- Community Education and Engagement: Foster awareness and education around food sovereignty, nutrition, and local food systems.
Funding Information
- Maximum application is $10,000. Projects that include partnerships and serve multiple communities may be eligible for grants up to $25,000.
Eligible Uses of the Grant
- You can use the grant for the following projects:
- Community Green Spaces: Creation, expansion, or improvement of community greenhouses, gardens, food pantries, or farmers’ markets.
- Educational Workshops: Hosting workshops on growing, harvesting, storing, or preparing local foods.
- Food System Control: Initiatives that aim to increase local control over food systems, ensuring better access to fresh and healthy food.
- Strategic Planning: Community planning projects focused on food sovereignty.
- Local Food Access: Other projects that improve the production or access to locally grown or harvested foods.
- Collaborative Efforts: Partnerships and initiatives that involve multiple communities are encouraged.
Eligibility Criteria
- Local non-profit organizations; and
- Local governments can apply.
