The Alaska State Council on the Arts (ASCA) is inviting applications for the Helen Walker Performing Arts Grants.
Each year, interest from this fund will provide grants to support the performing arts in Alaska.
Goals

The Alaska State Council on the Arts (ASCA) represents, supports and advances the creative endeavors of individuals, organizations and agencies throughout Alaska. Programs and grants address the following goals, based on the ASCA 2015-2020 Strategic Plan:
- Build an Alaskan arts and culture sector for the future
- Illustrate the value of the arts through arts-integrated approaches
- Grow Alaska's creative economy and develop the workforce of tomorrow
- Enable all Alaskans to lead expressive lives
- Strengthen ASCA 's role as a cultural policy leader in the state and locally
Funding Information
While awards average between $500 and $2,000, grants up to $5,000 may be requested. Grant awards are announced at the end of the application month, following review and action of the Council.
Eligible Projects
- Presenting/touring presentations including: theater, dance, opera/musical theater, music, performances for young audiences, literary readings/storytelling, folk & traditional arts, and media arts. Funds can be used for any expenses directly related to the project.
- Presentations specifically designed to attract new audiences, reach underserved populations (geographic, economic or individuals with disabilities) or underserved performing arts disciplines.
- Participation in workshops, conferences and other professional development opportunities for performing arts organizations volunteer and/or paid staff. This can include distance learning opportunities .
Ineligible Projects
- Requests to support a performing arts company's regular scheduled season;
- Capital exhibitions.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Council awards funds to Alaskan 501(c) (3) nonprofit organizations, schools, government agencies, Alaska Native tribes and individuals. If an organization has not attained tax exempt status they may be eligible for sponsorship by a qualified organization in select grant categories. The applicant organization must demonstrate a close working relationship with the sponsoring organization, and the sponsoring organization must agree to accept financial responsibility.
- The Council approves all grants. Some grant applications are reviewed and rated by a panel of Alaskan citizens, artists, and arts patrons in advance of Council final approval. All grants are evaluated in accordance with published criteria.
- All funds must be expended within the fiscal year the grant is awarded. Specific requirements are itemized in the application instructions for each grant.
- The Alaska State Council on the Arts and its grant recipients are required to abide by federal regulations which bar discrimination based on race, color, national origin or gender and require accessibility for persons with disabilities. Ethnic and cultural-based organizations are encouraged to apply to all grant programs.
Criteria

Funding awards are determined based on the following review criteria:
- Extent to which community (geographic or cultural) lacks access to the arts;
- The artistic quality of the proposed project;
- Impact of the project on the organization and/or the community;
- Education opportunities and outreach to the community;
