Deadline: 3 June 2020
The State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) has mandated the University of St.Gallen as Leading House for the Latin American Region (LH) for the bilateral collaboration with partner institutions in Switzerland and Latin America for the period 2017-2020, and to explore new research in the region.
The goal of the Seed Money Grants is to strengthen or initiate scientific exchange between researchers from Swiss and Latin American institutions in all disciplines by enabling them to jointly undertake preliminary research and organize meetings, conferences, or workshops.
The current call for Seed Money Grants 2020 aims to promote mono- or interdisciplinary projects and involve bilateral or multilateral partnerships with all Latin American countries.
The current COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates that international challenges such as global health, climate change, the preservation of flora and fauna, the end of poverty and other deprivations can best be tackled by solutions that extend beyond national borders.
Aims
- The goal of the Seed Money Grants is to strengthen or initiate scientific exchange between Swiss and Latin American researchers and institutions by enabling them to jointly undertake preliminary research and organize workshops.
- Seed Money Grants are particularly useful to develop joint project proposals, to be submitted to large funding agencies in Latin America, Switzerland, and Europe or to combine already existing and independently funded projects in Switzerland and the partner countries for long-lasting cooperation and present bigger projects (e.g. to SNF, ERC).
- Seed Money Grants aim to mainly cover travel, accommodation, and fieldwork expenses.
- The calls are open to all disciplines and fields for mono or interdisciplinary research projects. This year’s call will be restricted to certain SDGs and Innovation.
Funding Information
SMGs fund projects with a maximum of CHF 25,000. The grant will be disbursed in two instalments: 80% upon signing the grant contract and 20% after approval of the final report.
Important Notice: Seed Money Grants are meant to pay project related costs, travels, organization of workshops, conferences, consumables, accommodations, fieldwork, but cannot cover salaries, tuition fees, outsourced services and hardware.

- As stated in the Application Form, each proposal must have one principal applicant based in Switzerland and one in Latin America.
- The Swiss Principal Investigator has to hold an employment as a scientist in an eligible Swiss institution (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology, Cantonal Universities, Federal and Cantonal Research Institutes, Universities of Applied Sciences) with several years of academic experience.
- Research institutions in Switzerland have to be accredited by swissuniversities.
- The Principal Investigator in Latin America must be affiliated to an accredited university or a public research institute and hold a faculty or scientist position or a doctoral degree in addition to several years of academic experience.

- Researchers can apply, even if they already received a grant (e.g. from the SNF or Leading House), but it cannot be with the same project. Additionally, the Leading House will need to see the final report of the previous project and how it has evolved. However, priority is given to researchers/projects that have not received previous funding.
