The MedFund provides financial support through grants to management and co-management structures of Mediterranean MPAs in order to sustainably contribute to covering the recurrent management costs of these protected areas.
The MedFund is an environmental trust fund whose objective is to contribute to the sustainable financing of effective management of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Mediterranean, through the mobilization of public and private stakeholders.
Aim
- The aim of this call is to support:
- The initiation of management for newly created MPAs or those in advanced stages of creation,
- The strengthening of the management effectiveness of existing MPAs,
- The establishment or extension of highly protected areas within MPAs.
Funding Information
- The funding granted by the MedFund will range from 45K € to 55K € annually over 5 years per MPA.
Eligible Activities
- Co-management activities between a local NGO and the national MPA management authorities,
- Human Resources (excluding salaries of public administration staff)
- Maintenance of equipment, infrastructure and small equipment purchases,
- Monitoring and enforcement of regulations,
- Active governance and stakeholder participation.
Geographic Focus
- Priority intervention countries are as follows:
- Albania,
- Algeria,
- Croatia,
- Greece,
- Lebanon,
- Morocco,
- Montenegro,
- Tunisia, and
- Türkiye.
Eligibility Criteria
- To be considered, your application must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Be an officially established MPA or at an advanced stage of establishment;
- Have an up-to-date management plan or, at a minimum, a management guidance document;
- Have a dedicated management unit in place.
- Any application submitted by a non-governmental organization must be accompanied by a letter of approval or support from the national authorities responsible for marine protected areas.
Ineligibility Criteria
- The following activities are not eligible for funding from The MedFund:
- Investments and new infrastructure works;
- Purchase of major equipment, except in exceptional cases, if it is essential for the launch or continuation of the project and cannot be financed otherwise. For any request for equipment (vehicles, boats and others) exceeding €10,000, a specific motion of The MedFund’s Board of Directors will be required;
- Costs associated with research.
