The Zoo and Wildlife Nutrition Foundation (ZWNF) has launched the Research Grant and Travel & Education Grant.
The Zoo and Wildlife Nutrition Foundation (ZWNF) is a non-profit organization established for the purpose of:
- contributing expertise and providing funds to support zoo and wildlife nutrition programs worldwide
- furthering the science of zoo nutrition
- facilitating the dissemination of nutrition knowledge
- developing the next generation of zoo nutrition leaders
Types of Grants
- Research Grant: This grant supports basic or applied research in the area of zoo and wildlife nutrition.
- Education and Travel Grant: This Grant supports attendance at the Zoo & Wildlife Nutrition and Nutrition Advisory Group Conference Oct 19-22 in Oklahoma City.
Funding Information
- Research Grant: Grants may be funded up to $5000 to support research programs with no more than $250 allocated to travel expenses. Projects should be completed within 18 months of funding receipt.
- Education and Travel Grant: This grant funding may be used to support travel and/or registration costs up to $500 total value. Travel should be completed specifically for ZWNF attendance and a final report will be expected within 3 months of that time.
Eligible Projects
- Research Grant
- Examples of projects eligible for ZWNF Research Grant support include:
- animal studies evaluating nutrient intake and/or nutrient requirements
- evaluation of nutrient content of dietary items
- palatability studies and other effects of diet/nutrition on behavior
- development and/or validation of tools for nutritional assessment such as BCS methods

Evaluation Criteria
- Research Grant
- Proposals will be evaluated by members or designees of ZWNF and AZA NAG. Members or designees who could potentially benefit from grant funding will be excluded from the selection process. ZWNF board of directors and AZA NAG reviewers are not eligible for grant funding.
- Education and Travel Grant
- Proposals will be evaluated by members or designees of ZWNF and AZA NAG. Members or designees who could potentially benefit from grant funding will be excluded from the selection process. ZWNF board of directors and AZA NAG reviewers are not eligible for grant funding.
- Grants will be awarded to institutions or organizations (not individuals) and contractual terms must be signed prior to grant award, or reimbursement of expenses (receipts are required) may be provided directly to the travel/education Grant recipient
Ineligibility Criteria
- Examples of projects that are not eligible for ZWNF Research Grant support include:
- diet surveys without some component
- studies examining animal physiology without a nutrition component.
