19-Nov-2025The World Food Programme (WFP) is implementing a comprehensive initiative in Rwanda, focusing on Kigali, to enhance food security, nutrition, and education through targeted assistance programs.
The program spans multiple sectors including school meals, food assistance, logistics, and nutrition, with a strong emphasis on supporting vulnerable populations such as refugees, asylum seekers, and Rwandan returnees.
One of the main objectives is to ensure the effective management, preparation, and distribution of food assistance. This involves coordinating the reception, safe storage, and handling of food commodities, developing distribution plans aligned with UNHCR data, and providing timely distribution of in-kind food and hot meals. Kitchens at transit and reception centers are managed to ensure meal preparation follows WFP standards and food safety protocols, including the operation of milling machines to support meal production. Accurate record-keeping, commodity management, and regular reporting to WFP and UNHCR are integral components of this objective.
The program also supports school feeding initiatives, targeting children in early childhood development centers and transit centers under orientation programs. Nutritious meals are provided in Nkamira and Mahama, while kitchen operations, food hygiene practices, and management of cooks are carefully maintained to ensure safe and consistent service.
Emergency food assistance is another critical focus of the program, addressing sudden refugee influxes, natural disasters, and public health crises. The initiative maintains readiness to mobilize food stocks, personnel, and mobile kitchens to provide rapid meal preparation and distribution across the country. Coordination with WFP and relevant stakeholders ensures efficient planning and reporting during emergencies, allowing for swift response to evolving needs.
Finally, the program emphasizes strengthening food safety, accountability, and reporting mechanisms. Community food committees are empowered, with an emphasis on gender inclusion, while training integrates awareness of nutrition, health, hygiene, and protection into food management practices. This comprehensive approach ensures that Rwanda’s most vulnerable populations receive timely, safe, and nutritious food assistance while building long-term community capacity and resilience.
