The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) is seeking nominations for biennial EDCTP Prizes to recognise outstanding individuals and research teams from Africa and Europe who have made significant achievements in their research field.
Additionally, the awardees will have made major contributions to strengthening clinical research capacity in Africa and supporting South-South and North-South networking.
Every two years, EDCTP awards four prestigious international prizes to recognise the achievements of outstanding researchers and research teams from sub-Saharan Africa and Europe. The prizes will be awarded at a prize-giving ceremony at the Eleventh EDCTP Forum in Paris, France, from 7-10 November 2023.
Categories
- Dr Pascoal Mocumbi Prize
- This prize recognises the significant contribution made by Dr Pascoal Mocumbi, the first High Representative of the EDCTP Association. The Dr Pascoal Mocumbi Prize aims to reward an individual in recognition of his/her outstanding achievements in advancing health research and capacity development in Africa with significant impact on the wellbeing of the African population.
- Outstanding Research Team Prize
- The Outstanding Research Team prize is awarded to outstanding research teams in sub-Saharan Africa and Europe working on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected infectious diseases (NID) in the scope of the EDCTP2 programme. The prize recognises the outstanding achievements, and scientific and policy impact of teams that are actively involved in research, capacity development and networking in sub-Saharan Africa and Europe.
- Scientific Leadership Prize
- The prize recognizes scientists who have made significant achievements in their field and will continue to become leaders in their research field. In addition to their scientific excellence, the contestants should have made major contributions to the objectives of the EDCTP2 programme to strengthen research capacity in sub-Saharan Africa and to support South-South and North-South networking.
- Outstanding Female Scientist Prize
- The prize is awarded to female scientists who have made a significant scientific contribution and built measurable impactful research capacity through training and mentorship for the future generation of researchers/scientists in Africa.
Objective of the prize
- Dr Pascoal Mocumbi Prize
- During his 10-year-tenure as High Representative of EDCTP (2004-2013), Dr Mocumbi worked to promote capacity development initiatives and networking, as well as championing African ownership in various partnerships. He urged policy makers to support funding of health research in their own countries and to commit themselves to solving national health problems.
- The prize is open to women and men worldwide who are senior scientists, policymakers or advocates for health and research and who have made unique contributions and significant achievements in
- Promoting Africa-Europe partnerships in global health research
- Promoting and facilitating the clinical development of products for poverty-related diseases
- Advancing capacity development for health research in sub-Saharan Africa
- Developing and promoting international networking and cooperation of researchers, policymakers, funders and donors on poverty-related diseases.
- Outstanding Research Team Prize
- Contestants must be a consortium or group of partners who are:
- Residents of a sub-Saharan African country, or an EU Member State, or a country associated with the Horizon 2020 programme
- Actively involved in research, capacity development and networking in sub-Saharan Africa and Europe with outstanding achievements and scientific and policy impact in their respective fields
- Tackling EDCTP2 programme priority issues in poverty-related diseases (PRDs)
- Building and who have successfully built effective and equitable South-North partnerships through collaboration
- Addressing priority research questions and have produced health policy relevant deliverables, such as research data implemented into policy and practice
- Producing high-impact publications and who have achieved significant capacity building outputs at local research sites.
- Contestants must be a consortium or group of partners who are:
- Scientific Leadership Prize
- This prize is open to women and men up to 50 years of age who:
- Are excellent, world-class scientists working in Africa in the scope of the EDCTP2 programme
- Are residents of a sub-Saharan African country, or an EU Member State or a country associated with the Horizon 2020 programme
- Have made significant achievements in their scientific field and will continue to develop as leaders in their research field.
- In addition to their scientific excellence, have made major contributions to the objectives of the EDCTP2 programme through strengthening research capacity in sub-Saharan Africa and supporting South-South and North-South networking.
- This prize is open to women and men up to 50 years of age who:
- Outstanding Female Scientist Prize
- Contestants must be women who are:
- Residents of a sub-Saharan African country, an EU Member State, or a country associated with the Horizon 2020
- Working in research and innovation activities in sub-Saharan Africa within the scope of the EDCTP2 programme
- Making and have made significant scientific contributions and achievements in their research field and built measurable research capacity through training and mentorship of the future generation of researchers and scientists in Africa.
- Contestants must be women who are:
Prize Information
- Dr Pascoal Mocumbi Prize
- The Dr Pascoal Mocumbi Prize consists of a recognition trophy and a cash prize of € 50,000. The prize rewards the achievements made and should also be used to publicise and raise awareness about the prize winner, their specific achievements, and the EDCTP2 programme. There is no age restriction for this prize.
- Outstanding Research Team Prize
- The prize of €50,000 and should be used to further the research programmes of the winners and may support activities such as study visits and training attachments to collaborating institutions, data collection for baseline studies, conference and meeting attendance, and other relevant research-related activities. The objective of this award is to encourage scientific/research excellence, translation of research into policy and practice, sustainable capacity development coupled with skills and technology transfer.
- Scientific Leadership Prize
- This prize of €10,000 should be used to further the research programme of the winner and may support activities such as supporting study visits and training attachments to collaborating institutions, data collection for baseline studies, conference and meeting attendance, and other relevant research-related activities.
- Outstanding Female Scientist Prize
- The prize consists of a recognition trophy and a cash prize of €20,000. The prize of €20,000 shall be used to further the research programme of the awardee and may support activities towards training and mentorship of the future generation of researchers in Africa. There is no age restriction for this prize.
Eligibility Criteria
- The contest for the first three prizes (Scientific Leadership Prize, Outstanding Female Scientist Prize, and Outstanding Research Team Prize) is open to residents from a sub-Saharan African country, an EU Member State, or a country associated to the Horizon 2020 programme.
- The contest for the Dr Pascoal Mocumbi Prize is open to contestants from all parts of the world. Please note; however, that special rules may apply for entities from certain countries.
- The nomination of contestants who are currently employees of the EDCTP Association or serving on one of the EDCTP Association advisory (Scientific Advisory Committee and Audit Committee) or governing (General Assembly and Board) bodies will not be permitted for any of the prizes.
- Finally, contestants that have already received an EDCTP2 prize cannot receive a second prize for the same activities.
