The Wellcome Trust is currently accepting applications for its Collaborative Awards in Humanities and Social Science to fund teams who are tackling major health-related questions in the humanities and social sciences that require a collaborative approach.
The pharmacist, entrepreneur, philanthropist and collector Sir Henry Wellcome died in 1936. On his death, his will established a charity for “the advancement of medical and scientific research to improve mankind’s wellbeing”.
Funding Information
- A Collaborative Award is up to £1.5 million, for three to five years.
- Wellcome Trust supported includes:
- Research expenses, including research assistance or PhDs
- Research/teaching replacement
- Applicants can ask for funds for research or teaching replacement to cover the cost of a temporary replacement lecturer. Costs:
- can cover up to 40% of applicants contracted time and up to 40% of their coapplicant’s contracted time
- are usually for a person at a more junior level than the post-holder
- can be spread across the full period of the grant.

- conference and meeting costs
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants can apply for this award if applicants want to tackle an important and original health-related question that requires the combined knowledge and expertise of a team of researchers.
- Applicants proposed approach must have the potential to make a significant, measurable difference to health research in the humanities and social sciences.
- The number of researchers in their team can range from two to six and should be appropriate to applicants proposed research.
- Everyone in the team should have:
- a good track record in their field relative to their career stage
- a PhD or equivalent.
- Team members can come from the same or different disciplines. They can work in the same organisation (including the same department) or in different organisations around the world.
- Applicants salary must be paid by their host organisation in the UK, Republic of Ireland or a low-or middle-income country.
