WIOMSA, in collaboration with Universidade Lúrio and Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, is pleased to announce a call for applications for a training titled “Training workshop: “Common sense in urban planning linked with waste management”.
The workshop will take a “learning by doing/ solutions in practice” approach, focused on Pemba city, Mozambique.
Objectives
The training workshop aims to provide attendees with the opportunity to gain knowledge about the challenges that can be associated with the construction and implementation of territorially based development strategies and the implementation of waste management programs. The training has 4 objectives:
- Fundamentals of urban planning and waste management principles.
- Sharing knowledge on how local knowledge can be applied for requalification of settlements to improve their resilience to climatic events.
- Systematization of information from the past actions (education, community participation, governmental plans and implementation, NGOs interventions success and failure) to be used to elaborate a framework for recommendation of the best practices.
- Enhance scientific dialogue and strengthen the scientific collaboration among young researchers in the WIO region.
Training Workshop Content
- Informing about territorial planning today: conceptual challenges and new reference frameworks.
- Relevance of territorial strategic planning: principles and methodological guidelines.
- The valences within the scope of the analysis techniques necessary for planning;
- Understanding the agents that produce urban space and urban income;
- Approaches to waste management in the context of blue economy
Duration
- 5 working days
- 16 hours classroom sessions, 8 hours field work and 16 hours practical exercises session including an assessment at the end of the course.
- Participants must attend all sessions.
Outcomes
- Acquisition of the ability to grasp the dynamics of society’s transformation that frame changes in planning ideas and activities;
- Learn about strategic planning experiences already developed in the national and international context.
- Learn about sustainable waste management based on blue economy concepts.
Target Audience
- The training-workshop is applied for urban or settlement planners, environmental activists, scientific researchers, geologists, science advocacy experts, marine scientists, city planners, postgraduate students and engineering professionals who are interested in urban planning and waste management. Also include local Municipal Council (solid waste and wastewater), community representatives, civil society organizations (CSOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
- Note: This call applies to participants from the Western Indian Ocean Members States in Africa and the Adjacent Island States.
Workshop Pre-Requisites
- Minimum level of high school specific for planners, BSc for other subjects such as environmental, civil and chemical engineering, geologists, geographers, chemists, biologist, including personnel, involved in municipal administration and police makers who have some of the qualifications above.
