Spike Island is pleased to invite applications from artists based in the South West of England to develop a major new commission to be presented in their main galleries in summer 2024.
This is an exciting opportunity for an to create new work that they otherwise may not be able to make. The successful candidate will work closely with Spike Island’s curatorial staff to develop and produce the commission.
This opportunity is part of the West of England Visual Arts Alliance (WEVAA), supported by Arts Council England. WEVAA is a consortium partnership of nine organisations co-lead by Spike Island and Visual Arts South West and including the Brunswick Club, Bath Spa School of Art, Bristol City Council, Creative Youth Network, Culture Weston, North Somerset Council and UWE Bristol. This alliance is delivering a 3-year programme of activity with the aim of supporting visual arts progression in the region, with the collective vision for the visual arts community in Bristol and the West of England to become more progressive, sustainable and inclusive by 2024.
Benefits
The successful applicant will receive:
- An artist fee of £4,000
- A £10,000 budget to produce and fabricate the new commission. Spike Island will cover all other exhibition-related costs including installation, transport, insurance, travel and accommodation, per diems, documentation and take down.
- Support from Spike Island’s Programme and Technical teams to develop, produce and present the commission.
- Significant promotion via Spike Island’s website and social media channels before and during the exhibition, which will open to the public in summer 2024.
Eligibility Criteria
- This opportunity is for South West-based artists from all backgrounds. Artists at any stage of their careers may apply but please note that they are not able to accept applications from artists currently undertaking an undergraduate course. Applications are accepted from artists working in any medium including painting, sculpture, moving image, photography, drawing, performance and installation.
- The proposal must include the production of new work created specifically for Spike Island’s galleries that can engage diverse local audiences.
- Spike Island is committed to anti-racism and to addressing inequality in the arts sector. They strongly encourage applications from people who identify as D/deaf, disabled or neurodivergent, come from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds and/or who experience racism.
