U.S. Embassy Bridgetown encourages applications from qualified graduates in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program.
Applicants should possess either a first or second-class honor’s Bachelor’s degree, and wish to pursue Master’s or Ph.D. studies at accredited universities in the United States.
Study Objectives
- The study/research objective description that you provide is a highly important part of your application.
- It helps the reader better understand your proposed study goals. You should take great care to write a clear and very detailed description of the program you want to pursue.
- Be specific about your degree objective, major field and specialized interests within this field.
- Explain why you are interested in this area.
- Describe the kind of program you expect to undertake
- How does this fit into your educational background?
- How does this fit into your future objectives and goals?
- How are your research interests relevant to current trends/challenges in your home country?
- How will you apply your studies upon returning to your home country?
- References to proposed universities or faculty should not be made.
- The essay should be at least one page and no longer than two pages.
- Please use your own words. If you are planning to use someone else’s works or research you must credit the source at all times.
Personal Statement
- The personal statement is a narrative statement in which you give the reader more insight into you as an individual and your future contributions. It should include information about your education, practical experience, special interests, career plans, and your purpose in applying for study.
- Explain who you are, what is important to you and what you intend to accomplish in your life.
- Demonstrate your unique qualifications for your chosen field.
- Discuss experiences, people, and events that inspired you to pursue this field of study.
- Demonstrate your commitment to your field of study:
- What kind of contribution do you want to make?
- What do you intend to do with your degree?

Eligibility Criteria
- First-class honors or upper-second class honors Bachelor’s degree.
- Must be a citizen and resident of any of the Eastern Caribbean islands comprised of: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
- Must not be a “green card” (alien registration cards) holder or residing in the U.S.A.
- Must not be currently enrolled at, or pursuing studies at a U.S. university.
- Recipients must return to the Eastern Caribbean on completion of studies in the United States.
- Applicants are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), based on their intended field of study and they must submit their GRE or GMAT scores along with their applications for interview consideration.
- Fulbright graduates are subject to the two-year home-country foreign residency requirement. This rule mandates that upon completion of their studies all Fulbright Scholars must return to their home country for two years. Scholars within the two-year period are not prohibited from traveling to the United States but may be ineligible for certain employment-based or family-based visas until the foreign residency requirement is satisfied.
