Facebook and Andela have partnered to up-skill developers across Sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria and South-Africa) through the BuildforSDG program, a six-week immersive program where selected developers will work in agile remote teams to innovate on projects relating to the SDGs. This program will run in three(3) Cohorts and is currently open for applications for Cohort 1: March – May 2020 (Nigeria, Uganda, Cameroon, Ghana, South-Africa, Kenya).
The #BuildForSDG program is committed to helping empower you to build real-world, locally and relevant solutions focused on the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) while gaining skills you need to advance your career.
With a goal to engage 7.5k developers, #BuildforSDG challenge will give developers real-world experience working on high-value, high-impact projects to help improve their market-readiness.

Program Structure
The BuildforSDG Challenge 2020 has consists of five(5) stages only:
- APPLICATION PHASE (March 16th- 30th 2020)
- Complete Application Form and Level Up with Andela Curated Learning Content.
- PRE-SELECTION PHASE (March 30th)
- You will receive an email notification from Andela that you have advanced to the assessment phase.
- ASSESSMENT PHASE (April 5th- April 14th, 2020)
- Take your skill assessment test– This would be sent to you once you have met the pre-selection criteria.
- INNOVATION PHASE (April 20th- – May 25th, 2020)
- You will be grouped into teams and begin work on your innovative projects based on SDGs.
- PITCH-A-THON (Timeframe to be announced)
- Top 15 teams fin each cohort will pitch their projects to a panel of expert judges.
Pitch-A-Thon
This is an onsite event where the top five (5) team projects selected from each cohort will present their projects to a panel of expert technologists. From the top five (5) per cohort, only three (3) teams will emerge as best projects in this program.
Eligibility Criteria
- Current Location Of The Applicant: Applicants must currently reside in any of these locations- Nigeria, Uganda, Cameroon, Ghana, South-Africa, Kenya.
- Applicants’ Level of Experience: To participate in the #BuildforSDG Challenge, you must have at least one(1) year of technical experience and have a working knowledge of front-end, back-end, or full-stack development.
- Age: Applicant must be 18 and above by January 2020 to be eligible for participation.
- Member of Developer Circles: Applicant must be a member of Facebook Developer Circles. You can request to join a Facebook Developer Circle the Program Application form.
- Language: Applicant must be proficient in English and be based in a country where the program is held.
- A Dedicated Number of Hours: Applicant must be available for at least 15+ hours weekly for the whole six(6) weeks of this program.
In this phase, the Andela program team will review your application and advance only qualified applicants to the next phase.
Project Review Criteria
Projects will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Quality of code
- Team participation using Pivotal Tracker
- Level of the social impact of your project
