Creative New Zealand is currently seeking nominations for the Ngā Taonga Toi a Te Waka Toi (Te Waka Toi Awards) 2020.
The 34th annual Ngā Taonga Toi a Te Waka Toi (Te Waka Toi Awards) will celebrate and recognise the artistic excellence, achievement and contribution of Māori artists working in customary and contemporary Māori arts. Three of these awards are open for public nomination.
Categories
Creative New Zealand makes awards in five award categories:
- Te Tohu Aroha mō Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu | Exemplary/Supreme Award – 1 recipient.
- Ngā Tohu ā Tā Kingi Ihaka | Sir Kingi Ihaka Awards recognising lifetime contribution – 2 recipients.
- Ngā Tohu Hautūtanga Auaha Toi – Making a Difference Award (previously Te Tohu Toi Kē a Te Waka Toi ) – 3 recipients.
- Ngā Manu Pīrere – 3 recipients.
- Te Tohu Iho Pūmanawa – 1 recipients.
Three award categories are open to public nomination:
- Ngā Tohu Hautūtanga Auaha Toi – Making a Difference
- For: Recognises leadership and outstanding contribution to the development of new directions in Māori art.
- Amount: $10,000 – 3 recipients
- Ngā Manu Pīrere
- For: Recognises an emerging artist showing promise and potential in their chosen artform. The purpose of the award is to recognise achievement at this developmental stage, supporting the artist to develop their arts career in their chosen field.
- Amount: $10,000 – 3 recipients.
- Te Tohu Iho Pūmanawa
- For: Recognises the contribution of a Māori artist with the lived experience of disability to the standing, and standard of Māori arts in New Zealand and/or globally.
- Amount: $10,000 – 1 recipient.
- Te Tohu Aroha mō Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu | Exemplary/Supreme Award
- Not for public nomination
- For: Awarded to a Māori artist in recognition of their exemplary contribution to the development of ngā toi Māori.
- Amount: $25,000 – 1 recipient
- Ngā Tohu ā Tā Kingi Ihaka | Sir Kingi Ihaka Awards recognising lifetime contribution
- Not for public nomination
- For: Awarded to pakeke artists in recognition of their contribution to strengthening the continuity of Māori culture through their support of ngā toi Māori.
- Amount: $15,000 – 2 recipients.
Eligibility Criteria
- Who can be Nominated
- Nominees must:
- be a tangata whenua Māori artist working across one or more artforms (either customary or contemporary)
- be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident
- have a track-record of excellence and achievement and show potential for contributing to the further development of ngā toi Māori in New Zealand
- not be a previous recipient of the award in the same award category.
- Nominees must:
- Who can make a nomination
- Anyone may make a nomination.
- Artists may also nominate themselves.
- Employees of Creative New Zealand and members of the Arts Council may not make nominations.
