Deadline: 15-Jun-2020
The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) supports the commitment of the Federal Government with its Grant Programme “Marine Debris Framework – Regional hubs around the globe” (Marine:DeFRAG).
To achieve its goals, the Grant Programme against Marine Litter supports projects involving policy advice, capacity building, the implementation of policies and strategies, as well as technology cooperation and investment.
The primary goal is to avoid the production of litter at the source, thus reducing the amount of litter that can even enter the environment. This will be achieved through measures to reduce the quantities of litter, in particular plastic litter, produced in the medium term, as well as the establishment and development of waste and recycling management systems in the short term.
In addition to coastal regions and island states, the geographic focus of the programme is also on countries and regions that transport large amounts of plastic into the sea via their rivers.
Marine litter is a global problem that can only be solved through international cooperation. The 14th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and various international agreements highlight the importance of reducing marine litter for the protection of marine ecosystems. During its G7 and G20 presidencies, the Federal German Government placed this topic at the top of the political agenda.
