The World Food Programme (WFP) is launching a pilot project to promote sustainable cooking fuel solutions in Nyiragongo territory, North Kivu.
This project addresses several major challenges:
- The unavailability of firewood and the high cost of charcoal, exacerbated by the regional conflict;
- Difficult access to fuel for the most vulnerable communities;
- The need for a safe and efficient energy source to improve the food security of beneficiary households;
- The protection of women and girls exposed to the risk of gender-based violence (GBV) during wood collection;
- The reduction of deforestation, particularly in the Virunga National Park, a protected area housing a rich biodiversity;
- The fight against environmental degradation, including erosion and flooding linked to deforestation.

Expected Results
- The World Food Programme (WFP) aims to select a single partner, an NGO under Congolese law with legal personality, based in Goma and well experienced in this specific field to facilitate the implementation of this special project. The NGO will be able to contribute, in collaboration with WFP, to the following results:
- Adoption of sustainable fuels by beneficiaries (HRBs and organic briquettes);
- Improvement of the protection situation of beneficiaries, particularly women and girls (reduction of firewood collection time in areas at risk of GBV);
- Gradual reduction of wood and charcoal consumption;
- Development of the local production chain for organic briquettes;
- Tangible contribution to improving living conditions and energy security.
