Deadline: 22-Sep-2025
The Miles Morland Foundation offers annual Morland Writing Scholarships to support writers in producing the first draft of a full-length book. These scholarships are intended to give writers the financial freedom to focus on their writing for a full year.
The scholarships are open to anyone writing in English who was born in Africa or whose parents were both born in Africa. Selected scholars will receive a grant of £18,000, paid monthly over twelve months.
To qualify, applicants must submit an excerpt of 2,000 to 5,000 words from a piece of work that has been published and offered for sale. Clear evidence of publication and commercial availability is required. Submissions are judged solely on literary merit by a panel chosen by the Foundation.
Applicants must also submit a project proposal of 400 to 1,000 words outlining the book they intend to write. The book must be at least 80,000 words long. A short biography of 200 to 300 words is also required. Those shortlisted may be asked for additional details on their background and writing plans.
During the scholarship year, scholars must submit at least 10,000 new words every month by email until their book is completed or the scholarship term ends. Fiction and non-fiction are both accepted, though poetry, scripts, children’s books, and short stories are not eligible. Non-fiction writers may be granted up to 18 months if additional time is needed for research.
Scholars can choose to begin their scholarship anytime between January and June of the year following the award. Monthly payments and writing submissions will commence from their chosen start date.
