Deadline: 05-Aug-2025
The IGC Jordan PhD Fellowship offers a three-month research opportunity in Amman for PhD students and recent graduates. This program gives fellows direct exposure to Jordan’s policy and data landscape and allows them to develop policy-relevant research questions aligned with the country’s Economic Modernisation Vision (EMV) and the International Growth Centre (IGC)’s key themes.
Fellows will receive mentorship from IGC-affiliated academics and collaborate with the University of Jordan. Two of the three fellowship positions are reserved for University of Jordan students, while the third is open to all qualified applicants. The program seeks to support local research capacity by engaging fellows in practical economic research that informs national policymaking.
Fellows will work closely with the IGC Jordan team and government partners to produce rigorous, policy-relevant evidence. Through structured mentorship from professors and researchers at institutions such as the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), participants will strengthen their research skills, learn empirical methods, and connect academic work to real-world policy needs.
The program is intended to invest in Jordan’s research ecosystem by linking academia and government, nurturing young researchers, and enhancing economic policy discourse. The fellowship emphasizes building a stronger local research community through collaboration and mentorship.
Selected fellows will receive financial support equivalent to £5,000 GBP to cover living expenses and research costs. The fellowship also includes support for travel. The program is expected to run between September and December 2025, with flexibility on start dates. All fellowships must be completed by March 2026.
This part-time fellowship is open to three current or recent PhD students in economics or other social sciences, especially those enrolled in Jordanian universities. Fellows will participate in applied research and policy engagements alongside IGC Jordan staff, policymakers, and international experts.
Responsibilities may include data cleaning, analysis, literature reviews, preparing research outputs, contributing to policy briefs, designing impact evaluations, and participating in policy meetings. Fellows will also attend peer-learning sessions with mentors from LSE and Oxford.
Eligible applicants must be enrolled in or have recently completed a PhD in Jordan or in the MENA region. Jordanian nationals studying at MENA universities may also apply. Applicants should have excellent communication skills in Arabic and English, strong quantitative abilities, and experience with tools like SPSS or R.
Candidates must propose at least one policy-relevant research project to develop during the fellowship. Final outputs are expected to address key policy challenges in Jordan.
