The Sustainable Tourism Community Grant Programme (STCGP) presents a promising opportunity for civil and private sector entities to contribute meaningfully to Tobago’s development.
This initiative supports the implementation of community-based projects that uphold the principles of sustainable and responsible tourism, with the overarching goal of creating long-lasting, positive impacts on the island.
At its core, the programme seeks to improve community well-being while preserving Tobago’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. It is designed to fund projects that not only serve local communities but also promote environmental stewardship and cultural appreciation, ensuring that tourism in Tobago grows in harmony with the needs of its people and ecosystems.
Eligible projects may fall into several key categories. One of these is the preservation of Tobago’s natural and cultural heritage. Initiatives under this theme aim to safeguard the island’s unique identity, from historical landmarks to ecological treasures, so future generations and visitors alike can continue to enjoy and learn from them.
Another focus is equitable economic growth and community empowerment. The programme encourages proposals that stimulate local entrepreneurship, create employment opportunities, and ensure that the economic benefits of tourism are shared more fairly among Tobago’s residents.
Enhancing the visitor experience through authentic and responsible tourism is also a priority. Projects that create meaningful connections between visitors and local communities, or offer culturally rich and environmentally respectful experiences, will be strongly considered.
Lastly, climate resilience and disaster preparedness form a critical component of the funding criteria. This includes projects that build local capacity to adapt to changing environmental conditions and reduce vulnerabilities to natural disasters, ensuring that Tobago’s tourism industry can withstand future challenges.
Through this grant programme, Tobago is taking a proactive step toward shaping a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable tourism sector—one that benefits both its communities and its natural assets.
