Deadline: 14-Nov-2025
The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences offers the Van der Gaag Grant to support promising, socially relevant research into the biological, psychological and/or social determinants of human behaviour.
The Academy Van der Gaag Grant is awarded every two years and consists of a cash sum not exceeding €10,000. Activities funded by the grant must concern a research project or working visit abroad, with a minimum duration of one month and a maximum of four months, commencing between 1 February 2026 and 1 February 2027. Each researcher may receive the financial contribution only once.
Funding can cover travel costs, monthly accommodation, and, if the applicant does not receive a salary or other financial contributions during the stay, basic living expenses including groceries, insurance, and local transportation. The grant is intended solely for the applicant and cannot cover non-essential living expenses, research materials, or ongoing expenses in the Netherlands.
It is intended for researchers who are working on their PhD, received their PhD no longer than four years before the year of application, and are affiliated with a university or research institute in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Applications will be assessed based on the quality of the research project or working visit, with emphasis on a clear scientific research question, innovative contribution to the field, societal relevance, feasibility within the specified timeframe, and added value for the academic development of the applicant. Applicants will be notified within three months of the submission deadline whether they have been awarded the grant, and the conditions outlined in the attachment will apply.
Applications must be submitted via e-mail using the Academy’s application form along with the requested attachments before the closing date. Members of the Academy Board and the assessment committee of the Academy Fund for Behavioural Research are not eligible to submit applications.
Recipients are responsible for managing the awarded budget and must submit an accountability report within three months of completing the activity. The Academy may request repayment if norms of scientific practice are violated. Grant recipients are encouraged to acknowledge the Van der Gaag Grant in any resulting publications or projects, and the Academy will publish the recipient’s details on its website unless otherwise requested. Application closes on 14 November 2025.
