The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund has launched an emergency Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) response in Ukraine, focusing on the Donetska and Zaporizka oblasts, to address urgent water access and sanitation challenges affecting communities and institutions in conflict-affected areas.
The initiative aims to ensure that people, especially children and families, have reliable access to safe water and hygiene facilities amid ongoing disruptions caused by the humanitarian crisis.
Aligned with UNICEF’s WASH Programme Annual Work Plan 2025, the project seeks to strengthen national and local capacity to deliver sustainable, inclusive, and gender-sensitive WASH services. The broader programme goal is to reach 1,290,000 people across Ukraine with adequate quantities of clean water for drinking and domestic use, while improving WASH facilities in 51 institutions, including schools and healthcare centres.
Under this specific project, UNICEF plans to provide 60,000 people with access to safe and sufficient water for household and personal needs. The intervention will include the drilling of 60 shallow boreholes equipped with handpumps, ensuring immediate access to clean water in areas where infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed.
Additionally, UNICEF will focus on improving WASH services in three transit centres and 20 schools and healthcare facilities, establishing child-friendly, gender-sensitive, and inclusive sanitation facilities. These interventions are designed not only to meet urgent needs but also to strengthen community resilience, promote hygiene awareness, and support the recovery of essential public services.
Through collaboration with national civil society organizations and local authorities, the project will reinforce community engagement and promote sustainable WASH practices, contributing to a safer and healthier environment for vulnerable populations in eastern Ukraine.
