The International Journalists’ Programmes a non-profit organization, has been dedicated to fostering global understanding through journalism by offering prestigious exchange scholarships to young journalists.
These programs provide participants with the opportunity to work as guest reporters in foreign newsrooms, immersing themselves in new media landscapes while gaining first-hand insights into the political, economic, cultural, and social life of another country.
Among the various bilateral fellowships offered by IJP are well-established programs with the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Southern Africa (SADC), the CIS countries, Turkey, and the Middle East. Each fellowship is designed to encourage cross-cultural reporting and professional exchange between journalists from different regions of the world.
One such initiative is the German-Northern European Programme, which supports early-career journalists in exploring Germany’s northern neighbours. The program aims to deepen mutual understanding by providing participants with a personal and professional view into the societal and cultural fabric of the host country. Journalists selected for the program are placed with reputable media organizations, where they can engage with local issues, collaborate with foreign colleagues, and develop their own reporting skills in a new environment.
The scholarship is supported by the German Federal Foreign Office, the foreign ministries of participating Nordic countries, and private sponsors. Each fellow receives a one-time stipend of €3,800 to help offset travel and daily living costs. While accommodation and meals are partially covered by this grant, recipients are expected to contribute personally to some expenses. It is important to note that no additional payment is provided for the work conducted at the host media outlet.
The IJP programs offer a rare opportunity for aspiring journalists to expand their global perspective, build lasting international networks, and enhance their ability to report on global issues with depth and cultural sensitivity.
