Deadline: 8 January 2026
The Environmental and Territorial Management Institute has been launched to support environmental protection and community engagement in Albania through targeted projects in the Ishëm and Vjosa river basins.
The initiative aims to advance sustainable practices and foster collaboration among local organisations, schools, and volunteers while addressing pollution and waste management challenges along these vital waterways.
The programme’s key objectives focus on implementing the Beach Macro Litter Monitoring Protocol for litter larger than 2.5 centimetres. This includes selecting monitoring sites, collecting and analysing data, and producing detailed reports. Beyond scientific monitoring, the call seeks to build strong citizen science networks by engaging young people, schools, and local volunteers in hands-on environmental activities such as clean-ups and awareness campaigns.
Another major goal is to promote circular economy practices by linking monitoring results with practical local actions that reduce single-use plastics and improve waste management systems. Through this approach, the initiative hopes to not only track pollution but also drive meaningful behavioural change within communities.
The programme will run for twelve months, with a total fund of €75,000 available. Individual projects can receive between €12,000 and €15,000, covering up to 100 percent of eligible costs. This level of financial support allows participating organisations to fully focus on implementing their initiatives without requiring additional co-funding.
Eligible applicants include non-profit civil society organisations registered and active in Albania, with proven experience in environmental protection, waste management, or community engagement. Co-applicants are welcome, provided they meet the same criteria. Organisations that received funding under the previous call, or those affiliated with political or religious groups, are not eligible to apply.
This call for proposals represents a valuable opportunity for local organisations to take a leading role in advancing sustainable development and environmental stewardship in Albania. By combining scientific monitoring, community participation, and circular economy principles, the initiative aims to create lasting positive change for both people and nature in the Ishëm and Vjosa river basins.
