The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched a new initiative in the Central African Republic (CAR) focused on stabilizing and improving food and nutrition security for vulnerable populations in the Vakaga prefecture.
This project is part of WFP’s broader strategic objectives, which contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2, Zero Hunger, and Goal 17, Partnerships for the Goals. It also supports the implementation of CAR’s 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan and aligns with the national food security cluster strategy to address the severe impacts of food insecurity in crisis-affected areas.
The initiative, supported by funding from France, aims to provide integrated food and nutrition assistance to communities in Vakaga to prevent further deterioration in their food security. One of its primary objectives is to stabilize and improve food consumption levels among vulnerable households, ensuring that families can meet their basic nutritional needs despite ongoing challenges caused by conflict, displacement, and limited access to resources.
A key component of the project is enhancing agricultural productivity for approximately 1,200 households, representing around 6,000 indirect beneficiaries. By promoting sustainable farming practices and supporting local food production, WFP seeks to strengthen community resilience and reduce dependence on external aid. The program also includes targeted nutrition interventions to treat and prevent moderate acute malnutrition in children aged 6 to 59 months and in pregnant and breastfeeding women through the provision of vital nutritional supplements.
Additionally, the project places a strong emphasis on improving access to education and nutrition through its school meals program. Around 4,500 children in the Vakaga prefecture will receive nutritious meals prepared partly with locally sourced ingredients. This approach not only enhances children’s learning and well-being but also supports local farmers and contributes to building national and local capacities in managing sustainable school canteens.
Through this comprehensive initiative, WFP continues its commitment to supporting crisis-affected communities in the Central African Republic. By integrating food assistance, agricultural development, and nutrition support, the project aims to build a foundation for long-term food security and resilience, offering hope and stability to thousands of vulnerable families in Vakaga.
