The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) is seeking applications for funding for the fiscal year (FY) 2021 Enhancing Juvenile Indigent Defense program.
This program will provide funding to states and localities to enhance juvenile defense delivery systems. This program furthers the Department’s mission to reduce violent crime by supporting states and localities in their efforts to address barriers and gaps within their juvenile justice systems for indigent youth in order to reduce reoffending and decrease recidivism.
Goals
- The goal of this program is to implement enhancements that improve the juvenile indigent defense.
Objectives
- Program objectives are to ensure that youth involved with the juvenile justice system have access to legal representation and access to resources that address the collateral consequences of justice system involvement.
- Best practices for enhancing juvenile indigent defense can be found in the National Juvenile Defense Standards.
Funding Information
- Total Amount to be Awarded Under Solicitation: $1,550,000.00;
- Maximum Dollar Amount for Awards: $375,000.00;
- Period of Performance Start Date: 10/1/21;
- Period of Performance Duration (Months): 36.
Deliverables
- Deliverables include assessments of the juvenile defense delivery system to identify service gaps and needs and the implementation of recommendations to address those gaps and needs;
- Development and implementation of a training program for juvenile defenders (public and appointed) in line with national standards; and
- Improved capacity among juvenile justice personnel and systems resulting in the effective collection, analysis, and reporting of procedural justice data, and an increase in data-driven decision making.
