Australia Awards are prestigious international scholarships offered by the Australian Government to the next generation of global leaders for development. Through study and research, recipients develop the skills and knowledge to drive change and help build enduring people-to-people links with Australia.
Australia’s international development assistance supports inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in Fiji, by promoting private sector development.
Applicants are assessed on their professional and personal qualities, academic competence and, most importantly, their potential to make an impact on development challenges in Fiji.
Level of study
Australia Awards Scholarships provide citizens of Fiji with the opportunity to obtain a qualification at either an Australian or Pacific tertiary institution.
Awards will be offered for commencement in 2022 within the following allocations:
Australia Awards Scholarships (AAS) for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in priority topics at Australian institutions. Awards are not available for PhD studies.
Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships (AAPS) for the following Fiji National University (FNU) courses:
- Technical Vocational Education & Training (TVET):
- Diploma in Construction
- Diploma in Quantity Surveying
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
- Diploma in Marine Engineering
- Postgraduate:
- Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery
Priority fields of study
Undergraduate
- Environment (including but not limited to): aquaculture, biosecurity, climate change, conservation and environment planning, energy, energy systems and renewable energy, environmental management, environment and resource economics, food science, food technology and sustainable agriculture, supply chain and logistics management, and water resource management.
- Infrastructure (including but not limited to): architecture, building and construction, engineering (agricultural, biomedical, civil, electrical, environment, marine, maritime, mining, water), metallurgy, property and facilities management, transport systems and management, and water, sanitation and hygiene.
Postgraduate
- Environment (including but not limited to): agricultural engineering, aquaculture, biosecurity, climate change, conservation, disaster risk reduction, energy systems and renewable energy, entomology, environment and resource economics, food science, food security, food science and technology, food packing innovation, horticulture, meteorology, herpetology, pathology, seismology, silviculture, supply chain and logistics management, waste management, and water resource management.
- Governance (including but not limited to): border control and quarantine, child protection, counter-terrorism, criminology and corrections, gender, disability, social inclusion and human rights, evaluation, human resources management, intelligence, security and strategic studies, occupational health and safety, and statistics.
- Health – clinical (including but not limited to): anaesthesiology, dermatology, emergency medicine, nursing specialisations (acute care nursing, anaesthetics and recover nursing, cardiovascular nursing, critical care, emergency, gerontological nursing, oncology nursing, renal nursing, special care for newborn nursing), counselling, psychology, psychiatry, radiology, and women’s health.
- Health – non-clinical (including but not limited to): asset management, financial planning, biomedical engineering, disaster management, health information management systems, human resource management, logistics and supply chain management, and training and development.
Benefits
Australia Awards Scholarships are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian education institution, including any preparatory training.
Scholarship recipients will receive the following:
- return air travel
- a one-off establishment allowance on arrival
- full tuition fees
- contribution to living expenses
- introductory academic program
- overseas student health cover for the duration of the scholarship
- supplementary academic support
- field work allowance for research students and masters by coursework which has a compulsory fieldwork component
Eligibility Criteria
In addition to meeting the general eligibility criteria, applicants must also meet the following country-specific eligibility requirements to be considered for an award.
- must be residing in Fiji at the time of application
- program of study must not be available locally
- must be a minimum of 18 years of age at the 1 Feb 2022
- must not be serving an existing scholarship bond with Fiji or any other government
- must be able to meet the institutional entry requirements for their proposed course
- civil servants are strongly encouraged to seek prior approval from their respective Permanent Secretaries, in accordance with the Civil Service’s Learning and Development guidelines.
For Undergraduate level study
- Undergraduate applicants must:
- have completed Year 12 Certificate Examination with a minimum aggregate mark of 320 out of 400 (English and three best subjects) or equivalent and be studying Year 13. Scholarship will be dependent on applicant achieving a minimum aggregate result of 320 out of 400 in 2021, OR
- have completed Year 13 Certificate Examination with a minimum aggregate mark of 320 out of 400 (English and three best subjects) or equivalent
- mature age applicants who have completed a qualification should have 3 years’ work experience in the priority sector
- not hold an equivalent or higher qualification either at time of application or commencement of award (i.e. proposed courses must be progressive, higher than current qualification)
For Postgraduate level study
- Postgraduate applicants must:
- hold a first degree relevant to proposed course of study and priority sector
- have at least three years’ work experience in the priority sector
- not hold a Master’s degree either at time of application or commencement of award.
