The Thomson Reuters Foundation invites journalists from Ukraine to apply for an intensive 9-week online training program entitled “Coverage of Long-Term Conflicts: Civil, Military, and the Peace Process”.
The main goal of the program is to deepen the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of journalists in covering the conflict in Ukraine.
The training course will focus on the practical application of the principles of conflict coverage and the search for new topics, angles and formats in the coverage of long-term conflicts.
Participants will meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm for an online master class, meeting with international experts, or a hands-on online workshop with a group mentor.
All program participants during the course are expected to write 1 material with the support of mentors.
The training course is designed for journalists with work experience of 2 years. Dates of the program from September 6 to November 5, 2021.
The course program will include the following modules:
- Basics of conflict coverage
- Search for topics and new angles of coverage of long-term conflict
- Coverage of victims, civilians and military
- Working with open sources of information (databases, user content, etc.)
- Coverage of transitional justice
- Physical and digital security for journalists: how to protect yourself
- Trauma and emotional security for journalists
Funding Information
- Participation in the program is free.
- The program provides mini-grants of up to £ 350 for the creation of materials.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements :
- work as a staff journalist or work as a freelancer with the media in Ukraine; have more than two years of professional experience in journalism (applications from graduates of university programs in journalism will be accepted);
- be interested in or have experience in creating journalistic materials related to the topic of conflicts;
- the main language of the program is Ukrainian, in some cases sessions can be conducted in Russian;
- be prepared to commit to the program in full throughout the 9 weeks;
- during the 9-week program to create 1 journalistic material related to the topic of conflicts;
- be a supporter of objective and independent journalism.
