The U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur is seeking proposals that advance commitments and initiatives announced at the first Summit for Democracy and/or otherwise tell the story of democracies delivering together in the Year of Action.
President Biden designated the year between the two Summits for Democracy as the Year of Action to encourage governments to strengthen democracy and defend against authoritarianism, fight corruption, and promote respect for human rights, tolerance, and inclusivity for marginalized populations, including women and girls, persons with disabilities, religious minorities, and members of LGBTQI+ communities.
What Items can be included?
Proposals should include the following items:
- Program description that outlines the human rights and democracy-related program goals
- Target audiences
- Project activities
- Measurable outcomes
- Possible follow-on activities
- Potential media and social media amplification
- A detailed budget
Evaluation Criteria
- Supporting free and independent media including raising awareness of media freedom issues such as journalist safety, censorship, and the importance of media transparency for democratic elections
- Efforts to counter misinformation and disinformation
- Bolstering democratic reforms and strengthening electoral integrity
- Promoting respect for the human rights of activists, women and girls, youth, LGBTQI+ persons, persons with disabilities, religious minorities and marginalized populations
- Addressing drivers of inequality and inequity
- Combatting hate, intolerance, anti-Semitism, and discrimination
- Advancing internationally recognized worker rights and acceptable conditions of work
- Fighting corruption
- Investing in the development, use, and governance of technology that advances democracy and human rights
