The Public Diplomacy Section of Embassy Tunis of the U.S. Department of State has announced a grant through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for open competition for non-profit organizations to submit applications to develop and implement journalism capacity building programs in Tunisia.
Objectives
Proposals should seek to achieve the following objectives:
- Journalists can safely and more effectively conduct in-depth reporting and lead public engagement on local governance and political reform debates.
- Tunisian citizens have increased access to objective and quality, localized information on governance and economic issues.
- Tunisian citizens are more resilient to disinformation and better equipped to engage in public debate on Tunisia’s political and economic future.
Activities
Activities may include:
- Improve writing skills for journalists in specialized fields such as freedom of expression, democracy, human rights, foreign policy, the judiciary, economics, data security, environmental issues, and other issues of interest to the United States and Tunisians.
- Improve journalists’ ability to successfully navigate the evolving political and economic landscapes by providing diverse opinions on the topics of the day and by identifying and reporting on emerging issues.
- Improve media literacy and combat mis/disinformation among student journalists by increasing their understanding of press freedoms and media ethics in the United States.
- Increase thematic understanding among journalists, influencers, digital story tellers and other information providers on Tunisia’s political system, local governance issues and opportunities for public participation.
- Provide opportunities for journalism professors or local fact-checking organizations to receive mentorship from media and/or press freedom organizations in the United States, including universities.
Funding Information
- Award amounts : Awards may range from a minimum of $100,000 to a maximum of $250,000
- Total available funding: $350,000
- Length of performance period: 6-24 months depending on the projects proposed.
- Number of awards anticipated: 2-3 awards depending on funding availability and funds needed for successful proposals.
Eligibility Criteria
The following types of applicants are eligible to apply:
- Not-for -profit organizations, including think tanks and civil society/non-governmental organizations
- Public and private non-profit educational institutions
