Deadline: 16-May-22
The U.S. Embassy in Amman’s Public Affairs Section (PAS) announces an open competition for organizations to submit applications to support a cohort of influential journalists and other communicators to help better inform the public about Jordan’s climate and water challenges and their implications for the economy and viability of the country.
This grant would support a group of 10 or more Jordanian journalists and other public communicators to participate in a variety of engagements, including a 2-3 week informational trip to the United States to learn about U.S. environmental journalism, various engagements with the U.S. Embassy in Jordan, a reporting trip to the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will take place from November 7-18, 2022, in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, and others.
Priority Program Areas
The successful grantee would coordinate and implement the following:
- Selection of program participants (10-12 experienced economic and environmental journalists, recent outstanding graduates, expert columnists, expert commentators, activists, and influencers) in coordination with Amman PAS.
- Interviews/surveys of program participants to assess general knowledge levels on climate-economy-water, professional goals related to the program, and specific interests regarding the topic.
- Pre-briefings for participants with Jordanian and U.S. experts on Jordan’s water crisis, climate change forecast, and associated economic issues.
- All aspects of planning and carrying out a 2-3 week informational and/or reporting visit during Summer 2022 to the United States to learn about climate, water, and economy issues relevant to Jordan’s challenges, and to learn about environmental journalists’ role and practice in the U.S. This would include not only water-climate-energy issues, but also connecting program participants with environmental journalists in the United States in order to learn about the history and practice of environmental journalism and gain exposure to best practices and practical steps for this kind of journalism. This should include standard informational journalism (e.g., explaining climate and water issues both accurately and in a way that reaches audiences), and at least one example of the outstanding U.S. investigative reporting in the environmental sphere. (Grantee would facilitate reporting I visas, or J-1 visas as appropriate and provide Arabic translation for all sessions and all logistics for participants).
- Supporting participants as they fulfill post-informational visit reporting requirements (4-6 articles per participants before the end of the program).
- Travel and all arrangements for participants to COP 27 from 7-18 November 2022; including credentialling, advising on sessions to attend, etc.
- Networking and informational events and a capstone event in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy.
- Photos and draft social media content for all events and engagements.
- Other activities which support those listed above.
