Within the framework of the project “Mainstreaming Natural Resource Management and Biodiversity Conservation Objectives into Socio-Economic Development Planning and Management of Biosphere Reserve in Vietnam” funded by GEF through UNDP, implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the small grants activities will be implemented under the mechanism of the Small Grants Programme, the Global Environment Facility (UNDP/GEF SGP).
This activity aims to achieve the target of 2,500 households benefiting from the project in 3 Biosphere Reserves, including Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve, Cu Lao Cham – Hoi An Biosphere Reserve and Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve.
These activities fall under Output 2.6: “Sustainable livelihood practices implemented by communities in buffer zones of Biosphere Reserves to reduce pressure on biodiversity and ecosystem functions” and are designed to bring direct benefits to the community, effectively mobilizing the participation and contribution of the community in biodiversity conservation and resource management.
Principal objectives of GEF SGP
- Demonstrate community-level strategies and technologies that could reduce threats to the global environment if they are replicated over time;
- Draw lessons from community-level experience, and support the spread of successful community-level strategies and innovations among CBOs and NGOs, host governments, development aid agencies, the GEF, and other related associations/offices;
- Build partnerships and networks of local stakeholders to support and strengthen community, CBOs, and NGOs capacity to address environmental problems and promote sustainable development.
Objectives
- Mobilize best practices and initiatives in improving sustainable livelihoods to reduce pressure on biodiversity and ecosystem function in priority buffer zones in Biosphere Reserves.
- Replicating initiatives and good practices in improving livelihoods for communities to reduce pressure on the Biosphere Reserve
- Promoting effective livelihood models of the small program SGP/UNDP-GEF
Priorities
Priority given to below concepts:
- Developing production of clean vegetables, organic vegetables, sustainable fishing, waste separation, and other types of waste recycling;
- Developing tourism models to experience traditional villages (carpentry, lanterns, winemaking, traditional sedge mats); tours to experience traditional nya-palm painting villages and handicraft products from bamboo and nya-palm; eco-tours, experience traditional villages, visit organic vegetable gardens; fishing village experience tour and other types of river tourism;
- Developing partnership (farmers – guides; government; scientists; businesses) in guiding activities at sites in the core area of the Biosphere Reserve;
- Developing communitylearning tourism to connect learning and education programs between educational and training institutions and the local community;
Funding Information
- Grant amount: maximum 150,000 USD
- Duration: maximum 24 months
Geographical Area
- In Cu Lao Cham – Hoi AnBiosphere Reserve, priority is given to activities in the communes of Hoi An city, with the goal of reaching at least 500 benefiting households.
- 3 communes in the priority area in Hoi An city: Cam Thanh, Cam Kim, and Tan Hiep
Eligibility Criteria
- Vietnamese non-governmental organizations, socio-professional organizations, community-based organizations. Priority given to Hoi An organizations.
- Community-based approach, prioritizing the poor, ethnic minorities, and vulnerable groups (women, children, disabled people and young people)
