Applications are now open for the Greater Internet Freedom (GIF) Project Central Asia Policy Fellowship.
Internews, in collaboration with Access Now, the Global Network Initiative (GNI), and Ranking Digital Rights (RDR) will be hosting four (4) digital rights policy fellows from Central Asian countries to undertake digital rights policy and advocacy work.
With the guidance and mentorship from Access Now, RDR, GNI, and Internews, the fellows will work on digital rights issues and develop policy, advocacy, and research outputs on digital rights in Central Asia. The host organization will provide mentorship during the fellowship program and guide and support the fellows with their fellowship projects.
Fellows will become part of an international and reputable global civil society network working to defend and extend digital rights and internet freedom globally.
Fellowship Tracks
- Track 1: GIF – Access Now Advocacy/Policy Fellowship
- Access Now is an international human rights organization dedicated to defending and extending the digital rights of users at risk around the world. By combining technical support, policy engagement, global advocacy, grassroots grantmaking, strategic litigation, and RightsCon convenings, Access Now fights for human rights in the digital age.
- Track 2: GIF – Access Now #KeepItOn Fellow
- Access Now is an international human rights organization dedicated to defending and extending the digital rights of users at risk around the world. By combining technical support, policy engagement, global advocacy, grassroots grantmaking, strategic litigation, and RightsCon convenings, Access Now fights for human rights in the digital age.
- Track 3: GIF – Ranking Digital Rights (RDR) Fellowship
- RDR is an independent public-interest research program at New America, a Washington, DC think tank, that advances corporate accountability for human rights in the digital age. Since 2013, RDR has worked with a wide range of stakeholders to set global standards for how private tech and telecommunications companies can govern, design, and operate platforms and services that support democracy, social equity, and human rights online.
- Track 4: GIF – Global Network Initiative (GNI) Research Fellowship
- The mission of the Global Network Initiative is to protect and advance freedom of expression and privacy rights in the Information & Communications Technology (ICT) industry by setting a global standard for responsible company decision making and serving as a multistakeholder voice in the face of government restrictions and demands.
Compensation
- Fellows will receive a monthly honorarium of $1,500 from Internews for their time commitment and completion of the fellowship.
- Duration: This is a 6-month fellowship, beginning August 1st, 2022, dedicated to the Greater Internet Freedom (GIF) Consortium countries. The fellowship will be conducted in English.
General Expectations
- Although they expect that fellows have some working knowledge of current digital rights policy and advocacy policy discussions, they encourage applications from individuals at all professional levels, especially early career professionals.
- They are looking for the following qualities in their fellows:
- Prior knowledge of policies, laws, and regulations that affect internet freedom globally or in Central Asia specifically;
- Strong research, writing, and speaking skills in English and Russian, as well as other regional languages as relevant (the fellowship will be conducted in English);
- A feasible fellowship project that meets the criteria set by the host organization; and,
- A clear commitment to protecting and promoting human rights and Internet freedom.
