The Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF) introduces its new and refreshed journalistic training “Reporting Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery: A Solutions Approach”.
The 5-day online training, led by a veteran journalist, will provide a deep dive into the complex topic from a solutions journalism point of view, to offer new approaches to stories that are more accessible to the public. The program will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to produce compelling and impactful reporting through solutions journalism and data visualization, and will connect them with subject matter experts working against these issues.
Participants will learn about the interrelated causes of human trafficking and modern day slavery and understand the role of big business and problematic supply chains. They will hear directly from, and get in touch with, experts in the field who are working to find solutions both at the political level and at the level of those who work closely with victims.
The ethics, risks and legal dangers of reporting on this sensitive issue will be discussed and training will be provided on how to interact sensitively with traumatized survivors.

Workshop Format
- Dates: From August 22 to 26
- A series of live interactive sessions will take place via Zoom and take place over five half-days in the week of August 8 to enable busy journalists to balance learning with their reporting obligations. Each of the live sessions will last four hours in the morning, with a mix of online and offline activities and breaks.
- Participants must be able to commit to spending four hours on each live session, plus 1-2 hours of reading or offline assignments done on their own time on those days or between sessions.
- The training will be given in Spanish. It is necessary to master Spanish.
- Participants are also encouraged to come up with a story idea that they can develop throughout the training.

- Karen Rice is an award-winning journalist who has worked as a news and foreign affairs editor and correspondent, investigative editor, and writer.
- With a career spanning over 20 years, she has worked with leading brands including Sky News, the Telegraph, Sunday Times, Guardian and Observer newspapers as well as iNews.
- Karen uses her experience in leadership and communication to deliver media training in English and Spanish for Thomson Reuters, BBC Media Action, UK Foreign Office, Thomson Foundation, Al Jazeera, Oman News Agency and the European Union.

Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be full-time journalists or regular contributors to the Colombian media.
- Applicants must be fluent in Spanish. The course will be taught in Spanish.
- Candidates must have a minimum of three years of professional experience.
- Candidates must have access to a minimum internet speed of 8Mb/second.
- Applicants must have access to a computer to participate in the training; participation from a mobile or smartphone will not be possible
- Applicants must be able to commit to the full 4 hours for the 5 days of training plus 1-2 hours each day for homework and course preparation.
