Deadline: 1-Oct-22
Nominations are now open for the Canada Gairdner International Awards to recognize outstanding researchers whose unique scientific contributions have increased the understanding of human biology and disease and contributed to the relief of human suffering.
The Gairdner Foundation invites the scientific community to nominate qualified researchers for this Award. Nominations in the field of translational research are welcome. The award is intended for seminal bodies of work, not cumulative lifetime achievement.
Conditions of Award
- Upon notification, the award must be accepted by recipients within a term decided by the Foundation, and be received in person by the recipient at the Canada Gairdner Awards gala in October 2023.
- Recipients are expected to participate in the National Program that takes place across Canada.
- The Prize is valued at $100,000 CAD, and is for the personal use of recipients. An award citation and a medal will also be presented. A joint award may be made for the same discovery or contributions to medical science, but each recipient receives a full prize.
- Awards are made to residents of any country without restriction of gender, race, religion, creed or nationality.
- Expenses for travel & accommodation for recipients and their partners to accept the awards are paid by Gairdner.
- All selections are final, and are not subject to review or challenge.
- Recipients must confirm that they will be outstanding Gairdner ambassadors, upholding their commitment to recognizing excellence, inspiring the next generation and promoting a culture of science in Canada and beyond.
Selection Process
- Nominations for the international awards are reviewed on two levels. A Medical Review Panel (MRP), made up of active Canadian researchers in various fields, review and prepare a short list of potential recipients from the nominations received.
- A Medical Advisory Board (MAB) comprised of a diverse group of eminent Canadian and international scientists select the recipients by secret ballot for recommendation to the Gairdner Board of Directors. Dr. Janet Rossant (Gairdner President & Scientific Director) chairs the MAB.
- All nominations will be maintained for a period of five (5) years. If the nominee is not selected for an award after 5 years, a two (2) year waiting period must be observed before a nomination is resubmitted. Under exceptional circumstances, this waiting period can be waived at the discretion of the President.
