The Ministry of Culture of Mali and Institut français, co-producers of the Bamako Encounters, open the Call for Applications to the Pan-African Exhibition of the Bamako Encounters 2017.
Organised by the Malian Ministry of Culture and Institut français, the Bamako Encounters is the first and principal international platform dedicated to contemporary photography and new images in Africa. A sustainable platform for discovery, exchanges and interaction, the Bamako Encounters are known as a meeting place for African photographers and other art professionals from across the world.
The 11th Edition of the Bamako Encounters will take place from December 2, 2017 to January 31, 2018, with professional days from 2 to 5 December 2017.
Program Structure
- The 11th Bamako Encounters reflects a growing momentum of profound change across the artistic and cultural landscapes of the African continent. A new, multi-centric worldview is emerging, and Africa is on the move.
- The 2017 edition explores these evolving dynamics, and with them Africa’s unique challenge to establish itself at the centre of its own worldview, as a vital resource for a world faced with the urgent need to reinvent its future.
Eligibility Criteria
This call goes out to:
- All photographers and video and film artists in Africa, regardless of where they live,
- The candidates must propose a selection of works, photography or video or installation, linked to the theme of the 11th Edition of the Bamako Encounters entitled “Afrotopia”
- Applications by individuals and/or collectives can be submitted.
How to Apply
The application for the Pan-African Exhibition of the 11th Bamako Encounters includes:
- For Photographers:
- 15 to 25 photographs in .jpg 300dpi (at least 50/60 cm) with the name of the artist, the title and year in the name of each file, forming part of a body of work.
- A curriculum vitae and a short biography (maximum 10 lines / 1000 characters including spaces)
- An ID photo
- A text explaining the artist’s view of the relationship between the proposed works and the theme of the 11th Bamako Encounters,
- A scanned copy of the applicant’s valid ID or passport
- A bank identity statement indicating the applicant’s name, address and bank number
- For Video/Film and animation movie artists:
- A selection of your films with your name, title and its duration
- A document summarising the list of films sent with the title, length and a short synopsis, and possibly a link to an Internet website where the videos can be watched,
- Three visuals in .jpg 300dpi 20/30 cm taken from each video proposed by the applicant,
- A curriculum vitae and a short biography (maximum 10 lines / 1000 characters including spaces),
- An ID photo,
- A text explaining the artist’s view of the Relationship between the proposed works and the theme of the 11th Bamako Encounters,
- A scanned copy of the applicant’s valid ID or passport,
- A bank identity statement indicating the applicant’s name, address and bank number.
- For artists proposing a work in the form of an installation involving photographic or moving images:
- A selection of photographs (jpg 300 dpi) of the existing work, and a short explanatory text explaining the artist’s view of the relationship between the proposed work and the theme of the 11th Bamako Encounters,
- If the work is to be staged in situ, a short explanatory text and a detailed description of the project (including, if possible, an estimation of the required budget).
