The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is calling for proposals for Nutrition in ASALs Within Integrated Resilience Institutions (NAWIRI).
The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is spearheading the Food and Market Systems with an aim of improving Household access to adequate, nutritious & safe food year-round. To realize this objective, GAIN invites applications from eligible small and medium food businesses (SMEs) registered in Kenya. Your business should demonstrate the capacity to deliver food products in the ASALs and present an innovative approach that brings affordable, diverse and nutritious foods and contribute towards the fight against malnutrition.
Nutrition in ASALs Within Integrated Resilience Institutions (NAWIRI) is 5-year Resilient Food Security Activity (RFSA) project that is funded by USAID Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) implemented in the arid and semi-arid land (ASAL) counties of Isiolo and Marsabit in Kenya. NAWIRI is constituted by a consortium of core implementing partners, including Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), Concern Worldwide, International Business and Technical Consultants Inc. (IBTCI), Manoff Group, Tuffs University and Village Enterprise working deliver a multisectoral package of services to support local institutions to sustainably reduce persistent acute malnutrition among vulnerable sub-populations in Isiolo and Marsabit counties.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet all the following criteria in order to be considered for either grant and/or technical support:
- Company is for-profit.
- Your company may partner with other organisations, including nongovernmental and governmental organisations; however, the lead applicant and implementer of the business concept must be a commercial company/business.
- Associations and cooperatives are also eligible to apply if they are functioning as businesses.
- Company is a legally registered entity in Kenya (able to demonstrate a PIN number, certificate of incorporation, other relevant documents).
- Company must currently operate in Kenya with demonstrated capacity to operate in ASAL regions.
- Company is a financially viable business (i.e. the business model counts on sales revenues to cover all of the company’s expenses).
- Proposal may relate to an innovative business concept in nutritious foods including fortified food commodities. GAIN defines “Innovation” as a new or significantly improved product or business model, or an existing product or business model being introduced into a new market.
- Your product or service should directly relate to one of the following value chains: Horticulture (fruits and vegetables), cereals, pulses, legumes, nuts and / or Livestock (Camel products, dairy, meat, eggs and fish)
- Implementation of the proposed business concept must emphasize a nutritional impact for vulnerable populations for Marsabit and Isiolo counties.
- Business concepts with a primary focus on infrastructure, farm inputs, technology (Apps) or non-domestic/non-nutrition focused agricultural products (e.g., roads, exports) will not be considered for awards.
- Proposed business concept will be implemented in Kenya, ASAL regions.
- Proposed business concept should use locally sourced raw materials.
