The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is seeking applications for Challenge Prize Competition to provide an opportunity to young talented individuals to use innovative and creative approaches to promote, interpret or re-interpret and preserve intangible cultural heritage of Kosovo and its multi-ethnic character.
The “Challenge Prize Competition”initiative aim is to encourage young, talented individuals to develop innovative ideas on promotion and preservation of cultural heritage.
This activity will enable these individuals to provide alternative views to what they consider culture and heritage, a space to re-imagine cultural heritage and express their artistic capabilities, as well as to create a body of work which enriches the mainstream understanding of cultural heritage and alter how people interact with cultural heritage.
Objectives
- The overall goal of the “Challenge Prize Competition”initiative is to provide an opportunity to young talented individuals to use innovative and creative approaches to promote, interpret or re-interpret and preserve intangible cultural heritage of Kosovo and its multi-ethnic character.
- It is foreseen that it will raise awareness of the richness and diversity of cultural heritage in Kosovo serve as a source for cultural, social and economic development and social cohesion.
- To achieve these objectives, the “Cultural Heritage as a Driver for Intercommunity Dialogue and Social Cohesion” project will work with creative young individuals who are invited to apply for micro-grants, which will serve as financial resource for the implementation of the innovative ideas.
- The UNDP will provide micro-grants to finance the innovative ideas to:
- connect cultural heritage with creative industry and mediums,and
- find new and creative ways/approaches of interpreting or re-interpreting, promoting, preserving, and ultimately reviving cultural heritage.
- The micro-grants for best ideas for product or service are organized and grouped in the following thematic areas:
Funding Information
- The amount per micro-grants may range from EUR 3,500.00 – EUR 5,000.00.
- UNDP will be awarding and supporting up to six (6) micro-grant for individuals (women and men) coming from different communities.
- UNDP reserves the right to not award all available funds should the number and quality of applications does not meet the criteria.
- The duration of each proposed application/idea should not exceed the period of eight (8)month. The anticipated implementation period is between 25 October 2021 – 24 August 2022.
Expected Outputs
The overall aim and objectives of this project, the applicants should develop ideas which correspond to the thematic areas listed below:
- Traditional arts and crafts, handicrafts (areas include but not limited to):
- Creating online/offline platforms or workshops where the participants from different communities share knowledge of diverse forms of traditional arts and learn skills from the local artisans;
- Making craft skills marketable, connecting tranditional arts and crafts of different communities to online/offline market opportunities;
- Engaging youth of various communities and groups to participate in sharing traditional craft skills and expressing creativity through their own understanding.
- Agriculture, food and youth entrepreneurship (areas include but not limited to):
- Exploring locally produced traditional crops and traditional food, and sharing creative ways or recipes across the communities;
- Linking cultural heritage with youth entrepreneurship in the areas such as:
- digital cultural tourism which uses digital tools to organise and manage travel and to explore food, traditional costumes, lifestyle, architecture and art of the specific regions,
- digital heritage,
- digital economy and services.
- Oral history, theatre and music (areas include but not limited to):
- Preserving memories, creating a space for inter-generational and inter-community exchange on the memory to shape a shared narrative;
- Promoting performing arts such as music, dance and drama as a means of overcoming divisive narratives, expressing their interpretation of cultural heritage and raising public awareness;
- Reinterpreting the traditional music with the musician’s own understandings and collaboration between traditional music performers and contemporary music artists.

Eligibility Criteria
The interested individuals applying to this call must meet the following eligibility and qualification criteria to be considered for the selection:
- Individuals who are residents of Kosovo over the age of 18 to 35 years old (please provide ID card);
- Individuals who have great creative ideas and willingness to implement their project;
- Individuals whose ideas are based on new opportunities offered by creative industries;
- Individuals with sufficient knowledge in cultural heritage and creative fields, which is a prerequisite condition of this call;
- Individuals who are interested to contribute to the shared cultural heritage and have a clear and concise idea/ proposal to improve the promotion and preservation of cultural heritage in Kosovo (Note: the incomplete and ideas/proposals that do not fulfill the criteria will be rejected).
Note: Up to two (2) individuals can apply with one (1) project idea/application. Preferably applications to be submitted in English language. Should the applications are submitted in either Albanian or Serbian languages, as such will be accepted but the applicant should be prepared to provide translation of the main project document in English.
