The Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation, part of Wageningen University & Research, is seeking applications for the 2021 Responsible Aquaculture Development Course.
Aquaculture is a fast growing sector, especially in Asia. Growth has often come with detrimental ecological and social impacts. In other parts of the world, the aquaculture sector has difficulties taking off.
This course learns professionals involved in aquaculture sector development with making sector management plans for a certain region or ecosystem that take ecological, socio-economic and governance aspects into consideration. It informs you about the possibilities of more intensive aquaculture techniques such as recirculation systems, better management practices and environmental certification standards that are growing in importance in the western food market.
The course ‘Responsible aquaculture development for food security and economic progress’ is designed to train policy makers, civil servants, scientists, farm managers and others who play a key role in the development of the aquaculture sector in making strategic sector management plans in line with the FAO ecosystem approach to aquaculture; orient them about the possibilities and design principles of more intensive aquaculture techniques such as recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and intensive integrated aquaculture-agriculture systems.
The course will also better management practices and environmental certification standards that are growing in importance on the western food market. Te course will be organised in cooperation with Wageningen University and private companies and is to be held in Wageningen, the Netherlands.
Course Date
- Date: Mon 15 November 2021 until Fri 28 January 2022;
- Duration: Part-time, 15hrs per week (8 weeks);
- Venue: Facilitated online sessions.
What will you learn?
Upon completion of the course you will:
- Learn how to make aquaculture management plans for an area using the FAO ecosystem approach to aquaculture;
- Gain up-to-date insights about the possibilities and design principles of more intensive aquaculture techniques such as recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS);
- Be familiar with better management practices and with certification standards.
Eligibility Criteria
- The course is intended for mid-career professionals, dealing with aquaculture development in developing countries, for example policy makers, civil servants, researchers, teachers, extension officers, farm managers, NGO staff members and private sector representatives. Participants need to have a relevant education and at least 3 years of work experience in aquaculture. Proficiency in English is required.

- Before you submit, check your details on the final page of the registration form;
- After submitting, you will receive a confirmation email. Make sure to directly click on the link in the email to confirm your registration. Without your confirmation, your registration cannot be processed;
- If you apply as an OKP or MSP-scholarship candidate, you will receive a registration letter for the scholarship at the beginning of the scholarship cycle.
- If you apply as a self-funded participant: they will forward your request for acceptance to the course leader. This can take some time as it depends on the coordinators’ schedule (1-3 weeks);
- If you’re accepted into the course programme, they’ll send you an admission letter by e-mail;
- You receive all required travel documents from us after you are selected for the scholarship (OKP/MSP-scholarship candidates) or when they’ve received your payment (self-funded participant).
