The Berenson Fellowship supports scholars researching “Italy in the World,” focusing on transnational dialogues between Italy and other cultures such as Latin American, Mediterranean, African, and Asian, during the Renaissance. This period is broadly defined, covering the 14th to the 17th century.
The fellowship is residential and lasts either four or six months. Up to four fellowships are awarded annually.
Fellows receive a grant of USD 5,200 per month, along with a one-time relocation supplement of up to USD 1,800. Applicants should state their preferred residency period—either fall (September to December) or winter-spring (January to June).
Fellows are responsible for obtaining a visa, permesso di soggiorno, and health insurance. These requirements also apply to accompanying family members, if any.
Applicants must hold a PhD at the time of application and cannot be working toward a second doctorate. A scan of the PhD certificate must be uploaded. The proposed research may form part of a larger project.
Candidates must be fluent in English and have a working knowledge of Italian. Priority is given to early and mid-career scholars, especially those without regular access to research resources in Italy. Scholars from all countries are encouraged to apply.
Applications are reviewed by international scholars. Selection is based on the project’s originality and potential, the applicant’s qualifications, and their ability to engage collegially with the academic community at the Harvard Center.
Short-term Fellowships at I Tatti can be awarded only once and cannot be postponed. They are meant for scholars who have never held previous appointments at I Tatti, except Graduate Fellows.
Applications must be submitted electronically and can be written in either English or Italian. Scholars may apply for only one type of I Tatti Fellowship in a given academic year.
