Deadline: 15-Oct-2025
The ArtRoots, a community-focused fund managed by Sustrans, offers an inspiring chance for neighbourhoods across Scotland to bring their local, traffic-free National Cycle Network routes to life through artistic expression.
With grants of up to £6,000, groups or individuals can create community-led art that transforms walking, wheeling, and cycling paths into vibrant, shared spaces where creativity and active travel intersect.
This fund invites projects ranging from murals and sculptures to installations, performances, heritage signage, and community events—all designed to celebrate local identity and make traffic-free routes more inviting. Successful proposals demonstrate strong community involvement, a keen understanding of local environments, and the potential to enhance both the aesthetic and accessibility of the route for residents and visitors alike.
Applications are currently closed but will reopen in spring 2025, giving communities time to collaborate and design compelling projects. With no requirement for match funding and flexible claiming options—either in advance or upon project completion—ArtRoots makes it easier for grassroots groups to apply and innovate.
Since its launch in 2017, ArtRoots has supported more than 80 creative initiatives, from transforming railway tunnels with poetry and murals to hosting children’s circuses and scenic art trails. Each project has added beauty, engagement, and a sense of pride to Scotland’s cycle network, inviting more people to explore their surroundings in meaningful ways.
