Deadline: 04-Nov-2025
Applicants are now invited to submit applications for the MAKE Thesis Grant Program to support senior animation students around the globe.
Grant Awards include a First Place prize of $3,000, a Second Place prize of $2,000, and a Third Place prize of $1,000. Due to restrictions on direct fund transfers, funds will be used directly to cover production costs, including payments to talent and third parties, ensuring compliance with international student regulations. Candidates must demonstrate a passion for animation and a strong commitment to pursuing a career in the field.
Eligible applicants include senior BFA/BA and MFA/MA students specializing in Animation, Digital Arts, or related fields at accredited educational institutions, who are in the final year of their studies. Proof of enrollment may be required during the application process. Both individual students and teams are welcome to apply; however, each project will be evaluated independently. Only one representative should submit the application on behalf of a team, ensuring that all collaborators are properly credited in the form. The grant is open to international applicants, welcoming students from all countries and regions.
Applicants are required to submit the following materials as part of their application: a Story Concept and Treatment, which should be as detailed as the project’s current stage and university guidelines allow. This may include a synopsis, character descriptions, plot outlines, storyboards, character designs, background art, and any other materials that effectively convey the creative vision. All these elements must be compiled into a single PDF presentation. Applicants are encouraged to review winning treatments from previous seasons for guidance.
A Personal Portfolio showcasing prior animation work and creative achievements is also required; this may include animation reels, concept art, character designs, storyboards, or other relevant samples, submitted as either a portfolio PDF or a link to a personal website. Additionally, a Statement of Purpose (one to two paragraphs) should describe the inspiration behind the thesis film, the artist’s motivation for telling this particular story, how it represents their creative voice, and how the grant will support the realization and enhancement of their project. Lastly, a Funding Proposal must outline how the MAKE Animation Thesis Grant funds will be used to cover essential post-production expenses and festival submission costs.
This includes expenses such as editing, sound design, color grading, and music licensing, in addition to fees for submitting your film to festivals. You will be asked to describe in a paragraph how the funds will be used for your project—please be as specific as possible. You can use the following template. Please note that application materials will not be shared publicly, as they understand that many students prefer to keep details confidential until the official release date.
Submissions will be evaluated based on several key criteria. Creativity and Originality will be a primary factor, with judges seeking innovative concepts and distinctive storytelling approaches that demonstrate fresh perspectives and engage the audience. Technical Skill and Artistry will also play a major role, assessed through the applicant’s submitted portfolio and previous work to gauge their level of craftsmanship and artistic excellence. Finally, Overall Presentation will be considered, emphasizing the clarity, organization, and professionalism of the submission package. Applicants should ensure their materials are cohesive, visually polished, and effectively convey their creative vision.
The deadline for applications is 4 November 2025.
