Deadline: 31-Dec-2025
The New India Foundation is inviting applications for its NIF Translation Fellowships, aimed at promoting scholarship on Independent India while making important Indian-language texts accessible to a broader English-speaking audience.
These fellowships will support the translation of non-fiction works originally published from 1850 onwards in ten Indian languages. The initiative focuses on bringing historical texts into English to encourage comparative studies across different states and developmental paths. The goal is to expand the cultural reach of these works, many of which have remained limited to readers fluent in the original languages.
There are no restrictions on the genre or style of the original text, nor are there limitations based on the translator’s nationality or the ideological leaning of the material. The fellowships will rotate languages every three cycles to ensure wide representation across India’s linguistic spectrum.
Each selected fellow will receive a grant of INR 6 lakhs. Applications are welcome from translators who can demonstrate both skill and a strong proposal for their chosen project.
