Deadline: 31-Aug-2025
The Val Wood Prize invites writers to explore the powerful theme of Secrets. They want stories that uncover hidden truths, untold histories, private thoughts, and concealed moments shaping lives. Whether it’s a shocking revelation, a personal confession, a historical cover-up, or a truth no one dares to speak, the prize seeks emotionally powerful and thought-provoking stories.
Writers aged 16 and over can enter, interpreting the theme in any way they choose and in any genre, as long as a secret is central to the story. The judges look for authenticity and emotion — stories that feel real, with characters and situations that resonate. Entries should move readers, surprise them, or challenge their thinking.
Creativity and originality are important. Whether your story is humorous, dramatic, suspenseful, or subtle, fresh and compelling storytelling will help your work stand out. Strong writing and clear structure are also valued, including a strong beginning, satisfying flow, and a clear narrative voice.
Diverse perspectives are welcomed, recognizing that secrets exist across all cultures, communities, and eras. The prize encourages stories reflecting different backgrounds and experiences.
Entries must be no longer than 1,500 words, typed in Arial or Times New Roman with 1.5 line spacing, black font, and without background images or colors. The genre is open, except poetry or content with brutality, graphic, or violent themes. Only one entry per person is allowed.
Poetry and AI-generated works will not be accepted. Entries must be original, unpublished, and not submitted elsewhere. No edits can be made after submission, and entrants may only win one prize. Authors retain copyright, but organizers can publish winning entries online or in print for up to one year. Previous winners may enter with a new piece.
The first prize is £100 and a signed copy of Val Wood’s upcoming novel. Two runners-up will each receive a signed copy of her new release in Winter 2025. Winners will be announced on Friday, 28 November 2025.
