The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (FAAM) is now accepting applications for the Artist in Residence 2023 Program.
Aims
- FAAM aims to invite artists from Japan and abroad for a certain period of time, to provide them with various opportunities to create and exhibit artworks in Fukuoka, so that they could encourage each other to achieve their full potential to the world from Fukuoka city. It also tries to deepen the citizens’ understanding in contemporary art and different cultures to improve the quality of local culture by promoting art exchange with the citizens. Through this program, FAAM forges to build human and organizational networks on international levels.
Support from FAAM
- Round-trip airfare from the international airport nearest to the artist’s home to Fukuoka International Airport
- Domestic travel expenses and travel allowance
- Accommodation fee of a room booked by FAAM
- Living expenses in the amount set by FAAM
- Expenses required for art-making and art exchange program, including material costs and other relating expenses approved by FAAM
- Exhibition cost, including printing cost of flyer/leaflet and publication, and installation cost
- Travel insurance
Number of Artists in Residence
- Around 9 artists (groups) in total
- Only 1 person will receive financial support by FAAM, if applicants are in a group.

Artists from abroad
- 4 artists in total for all the residency period
- Japanese nationals living overseas are not eligible.

Artists from Japan
- 2 artists in total for all the residency period
- Any nationals living in Japan, except for Artists from Fukuoka. No regulations for the applicant’s nationality.

Artists from Fukuoka
- 3 artists in total for all the residency period
- Applicants must be a resident either in Fukuoka or nearby place, who should be able to work at the designated studio 4 days a week. No accommodation fees are provided. No regulations for the applicant’s nationality.
Eligible Activities

Art-making
- Artists should utilize their working environment in Fukuoka for their art making and projects, to present them in public. FAAM will provide support for art-making as well as collaborations with local professionals in the art field and universities, etc.

Art exchange program
- Artists should conduct workshops or talk events for the people of Fukuoka, including children, students and general participants.

The works made during the residency are exhibited.
- Artists selected for the 1st residency period may use a room of 600 m for the exhibit. FAAM will actively support and publicize applicants’ activities on the residency.
Eligibility Criteria
Acceptable applicants must:
- Be visual artists who already have a degree of experience in presenting their artwork and/or activities and who have the potential to grow in international art field in the future.
- Speak basic Japanese or English sufficient for daily communication in Japan.
- Submit a letter of recommendation written by a responsible person from an art professional, institute or group.
Criteria
- In principle, FAAM accepts no family members or assistants to accompany the artist.
- The artist is required, in principle, not to return home or to visit other countries during the period of the residency.
- Artists should afford the expense of transportation of the works to the artist’s home address.
