The Literature Translation Institute of Korea is accepting applications for the Translation Award for Aspiring Translators. This award aims to identify and support new talent in translating Korean literary and cultural content, helping to connect Korean works with global audiences.
One winner will be selected per language category and will receive a prize of 5 million Korean won along with a trophy. Winners residing outside Korea will be supported with round-trip airfare and accommodation to attend the award ceremony.
The competition spans three categories: Literature, Movies, and Webtoons. The literature category includes nine language options—English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Indonesian. The movie and webtoon categories are offered in four languages each, with overlapping options in English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, French, and Japanese.
Eligible applicants for the literature category include Korean or foreign nationals who have not received official translation support or published Korean literary translations abroad. Participation in anthologies through the Institute’s programs is allowed. For the movie category, eligibility is limited to individuals who have translated subtitles for no more than one movie or drama screened publicly, entered in film festivals, or released on OTT platforms. In the webtoon category, individuals who have released or published translated versions overseas may apply.
Only one entry is allowed per applicant across all categories and languages. Multiple submissions will result in disqualification. It is possible to win in both literature and cultural content categories, but not in the same category more than once. Joint translation is prohibited in all categories. Any proven case of plagiarism, machine translation, or third-party editing will lead to award cancellation.
Applicants must submit a translation manuscript. For literature, the manuscript should be created in MS Word or Hangul format, converted to PDF, and submitted. For movie and webtoon categories, a designated form must be filled out. Translations must include the title and full text but exclude any personal information.
