Applications are now open for a grant that supports artists and cultural practitioners at risk by providing temporary residencies in Germany or their regions of origin. This initiative aims to help individuals continue their creative work in a safer environment.
The Martin Roth-Initiative (MRI) funds cultural and civil society organizations that host these artists, offering them grants and a secure space for their work. MRI also provides direct grants for artists without requiring a host organization, enabling broader access to support.
Applications are reviewed by the MRI and assessed by an independent committee. Selection is based on the risk level faced by the applicant, the quality and relevance of their work, the strength of the application, and the host organization’s ability to support and collaborate. The potential positive social impact and attention to gender and diversity also play key roles in the decision-making process.
The funding may cover a monthly stipend, language courses, training, and networking opportunities. It can also include financial support for the host organization to help cover staffing needs, as well as ongoing guidance from MRI and connection to a broader support network.
Eligible artists and cultural workers must be committed to values such as peace, democracy, and human rights. They must be at risk due to their work, currently residing in unsafe conditions, and lacking access to a secure country of residence. They should also have relevant language skills and a record of meaningful artistic or cultural activity.
Host organizations can be museums, theaters, festivals, or other cultural and socially engaged institutions. They must be capable of supporting the artistic and personal needs of the scholarship holders and are required to submit a joint application with the artists they aim to support.
