Nominations are now open for the Te Waka Toi Awards 2021 to celebrate and recognize the artistic excellence, achievement, and contribution of Maori artists working in customary and contemporary Maori arts.
Nga Taonga Toi a Te Waka Toi, the annual Te Waka Toi Awards, celebrates and recognizes the artistic excellence, achievement and contribution of Maori artists working in customary and contemporary Maori arts in Aotearoa.
Categories
- Nga Tohu Haututanga Auaha Toi – Making a Difference Award (previously Te Tohu Toi Ke a Te Waka Toi): 3 recipients.
- Nga Manu Pirere: 3 recipients.
- Te Tohu Iho Pumanawa: 1 recipient.
Award Details
Three award categories are open to public nomination:
- Nga Tohu Haututanga Auaha Toi – Making a Difference Award: $10,000
- Nga Manu Pirere: $10,000
- Te Tohu Iho Pumanawa: $10,000
Eligibility Criteria
Nominees must:
- be a tangata whenua Maori artist working across one or more artforms (either customary or contemporary)
- be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident
- have a track-record of excellence and achievement and show potential for contributing to the further development of nga toi Maori in New Zealand
- not be a previous recipient of the award in the same award category.
Who can make a nomination?
- Anyone may make a nomination.
- Artists may also nominate themselves.
- Employees of Creative New Zealand and members of the Arts Council may not make nominations or be nominated.
